First, this was supposed to be some pics for Bill D and help with ID'ing WAE sex but as it turned out we only sampled 13 walleye and all were males so I'm linking a few pics of what happens when you have a remnant population of smallies in an impoundment with LMB but conditions decline and the LMB nearly disappear. We started seeing these this spring with size and mass and it's cool to see how this impoundment has changed since filling in 1995.
I'm betting you can identify the 3rd fish as well.
The first pic is just an old stud holding another stud...

WR of those SMB appear 120+...tell us more - forage base?

LMB is definitely not holding it's own vs the SMB...maybe 95 WR is my guess. That's yet another surprise...

Dude in the top pick has the most impressive WR of all.... wink

I demand the DEETS, yo!

My WR is about 190%, Milk dudes, M&M's, Tootsie rolls and other similar forage items..
Pic #3 is a spot!
Crawdads are primary source of forage. This impoundment has loads of Red shiner, a few GSH, Logger perch darters and some common shiners. Normally we have a large gizzard shad population but for whatever reason they just didn't reproduce this year, very strange deal, and WB and small HSB show it. Larger fish seem to have food available. We found a leopard frog in a 2lb male WAE. Different for sure.
BG, BCP, WCP, WB, HSB & WAE are other species present. This 7000 ac impoundment has came up 18' since fall of last year and there are some tremendous LMB recruits but 1 year isn't going to fill that huge void. This is also our main WAE Egg supply lake.
Vis was 14'+ on Monday...because we only have 14' of rope on disc.

I find it really odd that in my one acre RES/SMB pond I can see the SMB but they sure do not want to bite what I offer. Yet in my main 3 acre pond where I have transferred some of the SMB out of the RES/SMB pond into it and they are a relatively small portion of the overall fish population I catch one or two about every time I fish off the dock around the fish feeder.

My only explanation is that in the main pond the smallies have to compete with a robust population of BG where in the RES/SMB pond that competition is lacking. Don't know if that is the reason for sure, but for some reason in the main pond I catch them regularly.

I need to know what to look for in the identification of the spotted bass.

John,

At first glance at pic 3, I also thought the fish was a LMB. Now that Snipe pointed it out, I see it is a Spot.

I'm no Spot expert for sure but I believe the back of the jaw lines up pretty much with the eye on a Spot (similar to SMB) while the back of the jaw on LMB extends a good bit behind the eye.

and to compare..

In my opinion, SMB can differ much more in color variations but the jaw falling short of eye socket is key.

Thanks!

At one time I would have liked to have some spotted bass. But now that I have SMB I think I am happy with them.

When you talk about a 7,000 acre BOW, our basic thought pattern that LMB will out-compete and out-populate SMB may be far off considering mid country locations.

+1 and the nature of the lake is a key to how well each species does in cooler waters (north).

Also need to take into account, the res had dropped 35ft from it's peak in 1994 when the LMB had exploded which is also when the SMB almost disappeared. From 2003 to 2017 you couldn't hardly find a LMB and the SMB came back and have prospered.
Now the lake is back up and the recruitment of LMB is showing up in extremely high numbers and I fully expect to see SMB numbers decline again just as they did after the influx in 1994 which by 2000 you couldn't hardly find a SMB.
We haul threadfin from Texas every year and most years there is some carryover that surprises everyone.

Depends on the winter TJ, but about 3 out of 5 years they show up.

It probably is for any consistency TJ. They run 5-6 truck loads every year and to my knowledge there hasn't been significant numbers over-all but there's always a few after mild winters. Last year wasn't one of those years.

Dr. Dave Willis also noted that in BOW's that experience draw downs that have both LMB and SMB populations, if the draw downs occur during LMB spawning time that the SMB will out compete the LMB. The SMB seem to be able to handle fluctuating water levels better than LMB when it comes to reproduction.

SMB reproduction is before LMB reproduction in cooler waters and SMB eggs/fry are better at withstanding cool water temp changes. Thus the SMB have an initial feeding advantage in deep cool waters.

The TFS info is certainly possible as described. Local adaptation can also occur at the margin (a few degrees). Even in the south when a pond freezes over and TFS die-off , if the pond is deep a few can overwinter. GS is the usual replacement species in Northern waters (can get very ig however).
