my pond is about 3ft from the top of my dam, how close to the top of the dam can i hold my water level, because the higher i go makes a significant diff. to the layout of my pond.also if i put my bass in in oct. how big would they be by june if i dont feed.adding to ? 1 i only have a small spring running to my pond so not much chance of run over.

Hosty, The freeboard on your dam depends on the how much watershed you have. If there is a potential for a huge influx of water during a storm then more freeboard is needed. You should be measuring from the top of your emerg. spillway & not the top of the dam.
Give more info on the size of your watershed & your pond in general such as size, location, what forage your already have, are you feeding ect. & you will get great advice from the best pondmiesters anywhere! This is the greatest site to ask such questions, just give them some more info.
