I took a stroll around the puddle this evening and found a bunch of small snails in the grass near the overflow. I'm in the process of acquiring 100 3-5" RES to put in the pond. This will be the first fish I've bought for stocking. Hopefully, this size fish will be big enough to avoid heavy predation by my three LMB.

Went to the pond to start removing LMB. Fishing was slow in the 20 mph wind but caught 3 small ones

Well crap, got an email reply from the only hatchery I'm aware of in Louisiana, and wouldn't you know it, they're not raising RES this year.

Anyone in Texas have a contact near the Louisiana border?

Thanks Pat. I've heard of them but couldn't remember it. It may be more cost effective for me to go get them and transport myself in a large cooler with aeration. Only need about 100 fish. I'll give them a shout and see what they've got.

Hey Pat,
Just talked to Shannon at Overtons. They recommended 100 but wont know what size they'll be until they pick them up sometime next week (either 2-3" or 3-4")

I'll have to go pick them up since it's such a small order, so maybe we can get together. She's a real sweet lady!!

If I remember correctly, she said the 3-4" would be $0.65 each. I have no problem spending that. I just hope that's what they have. I've got just a handful maybe 3-4" fish that I bucket stocked, but I didn't get them until after their spawn. And I've trapped a couple smaller from the pond. I have no idea how many Harvey may have transplanted, so I may end up being a bit heavy on RES after this purchase, but that may make catching them a bit easier.

Oh, I did mention your name...and Shannon said ..."Who???!!!" Lol just kidding, I actually considered dropping your name but I was afraid they just might Jack the price up, so...

Nahh, really....thanks a lot Pat. It's much appreciated.

Checked the pond again. With today's rain I should be 3/4 full. No leaks as far as I can tell. Glad I had all clay because it received very little compaction during the dig.

Got another good rain last night. The fullest it has ever been. Still more than a foot below the spillway.

Another (or the same) cormorant visited this morning. I scared him away again. I'm hoping if he doesn't get comfortable here he'll find another place to plunder. Nearby Lake Livingston is full of these endangered federally protected barely surviving unfairly taunted beautiful creatures.

4 acre pond 32 ft deep within East Texas (Livingston) timber ranch. Filled (to the top of an almost finished dam) by Hurricane Harvey 9/17. Stocked with FHM, CNBG, RES 10/17. Added 35lbs RSC 3/18. 400 N LMB fingerlings 6/18

Had this osprey visit again yesterday. He made a few passes but with the wind whipped waves he couldn't seem to spot lunch.

He is a welcome predator. I'd like to see him move in.

P.S. Anybody know how to make the above image display inline?

If they have any 3-4" on hand, I may try to add about 50 into that box of RES, and hope they'd mix in with the native BG and help improve the size genetics.

Edit: Sent Shannon a text to find out if they had any CNBG ready, what sizes and price. I added 50 (3-6") to my order.

My seem to be resident Osprey attacked and chased off a great Blue Herron. He actually made an attack like a fighter plane might do, as the GBH was feeding along the shoreline. And after that display the Osprey hid somewhere and showed up again an hr or so later to run off another GBH. This second GBH never made it to the shoreline. You think this Osprey has declared this as his fishing spot? smile And just because I enjoy watching does not mean I am a fan of the Osprey.

Not sure who eats more, but sounds like your better off feeding one Osprey, if he keeps the rest of the fish thieves away. lol!

My son in law used a drone to take video of the pond & surroundings. Amazing technology! Wonder if it could be used to buzz off cormorants and maybe even find eagle nest, though I do not want to disturb eagles.

Saw a video several months back where a large city in Canada (Ontario?) hired a company with drones to keep geese away from public areas. Seemed to work well. I'm betting it would work with any unwanted water fowl. We have a new chocolate lab puppy and I'm hoping she will serve the same purpose! smile

That's cool Bill D. What did you name the pup? They are very smart and I have learned over the years that its all about the trainer when it comes to what all they can be. And Al recently made a comment about Highflyers new flying toy. Something was said about fling it over the pond.

Not what I did today, but what I'll be doing tomorrow! Today we bought apple, peach, plum, satsuma, orange and fig trees, as well as two blue berry bushes and a thornless blackberry bush. All of them are going to be planted around the perimeter of the pond tomorrow. Hope I don't kill them all!!!
