Jeff, I consider them more as bottom land animals. I have a bayou or what we called a nice creek when I was growing up in Okla. This Bayou is about 300 yds from the pond and it is what I consider a travel corridor for animals, birds and reptiles. Remember the alligator I had in the pond awhile back?

It's been some different weather this year so far. This time last year we saw some 22 degree weather but this year we will have temps in the high 60's and maybe 70 for the next 4 days. Bob Lusk has said that we might get some bg spawn on warm days in Feb. but I am seeing some warm days in Jan this year so I will be adding 10 Christmas trees along the shoreline today. Building some brush piles for the bg fry to insure some fry survival. Adding shoreline cover has worked in the past, hoping it will do it again. And I am taking a great-granddaughter fishing today. She is 3 and likes to catch bg from the pier.

My Gambusia were up in 2-3" of water yesterday afternoon in the bright sunshine. It will be even warmer today (60s), and for the next few days, but will be low 30s by daylight.

Missing Dock Walkway Update:

First I thought I was going to be smart and jump on the floating walkway and basically stand and paddle it down the pond like a wind-surfer. That worked for about 2 mins until it started sinking and I went in water. Brrrr...

Next my buddy in jeans walked the luckily floating walkway back down to the other end of the pond where it belongs.

Then we put down some boards and pulled the Trex dock up on shore with two ATV's.

Water was cold, but fortunately temp got up to 70 degrees today.

Dock builder says on Monday when temps are predicted to be 68 degrees he will get walkway back onto bracing by using three 18 wheeler tire tubes. We'll see if his "trick" works.

Southern Leopard Frogs have shown up en mass after last week's rains. They are really singing at night. About an hour before dawn the guys are croaking like crazy, I guess they know it's almost dawn and they need to find a lady frog before the bar closes.

I expect a lot of pollywogs in a few weeks.

I added the 10 Christmas trees along the shoreline yesterday. Most were added to existing lay down tree branches and or last years Christmas tree brush piles. I saved the two largest ones for adding to the to Christmas tree poles that are out in the deeper water. I will add them today. All the shoreline trees were added using a single hole cinder block as the anchor. After all that I went through my fishing tackle and rigged up a Caroline rig using a pearl colored fluke with the tail died Chartreuse. Caught lmb from 13" to 18" all of them were above the 100% on the RW chart. And all the lmb looked really good and healthy. While I was lmb fishing I saw some fish feeding on TFS around the pond. I targeted the HSB using a pearl colored tube bait dragged along the bottom. Second cast produced an 18" 3 1/2 lb nice and healthy HSB. I called it a day after that. It was a good day at the pond to say the least. Water temp was 51.7 to 9'. And like Vortex, the frogs were many and loud as they called out for the night.

I went out to the pond to feed and noticed the clarity of the water since the last rain event has started to clear up again. It had been reduced to less than a foot but now is back to around 18".

After throwing a few handfuls of AM500, I took a stroll around the bank with my polorized sunglasses on and noticed that it appears I must have had a very late season spawn of BG. Looks like I've got hundreds, if not thousands of YOY around 1-1.5" long. You can see hundreds of minnows right at the bank's edge, and just out from the bank, which is rather steep, if you look deeper, maybe 8-10, you see schools of tiny panfish swimming by all in the same direction of travel, so I know I wasn't seeing the same fish. Kinda has me a bit concerned how successful my three LMB will be this spring when it's their turn to spawn. I may have to do some trapping and try to thin out some of those panfish numbers.

I also discovered what looks like a couple of patches of Chara starting to sprout in very shallow water. I haven't done a smell test yet, but from pictures I've seen here, that's what it looks like. I'm glad to see some vegetation starting to take hold and contribute to reducing my nutrient load.

The pond seems to be coming into it's own at just a little over two years old and having only bucket stocked a few dozen fish, but I may need to increase my LMB numbers to keep the "perch" under control. If nothing else, my 3 bass aught to have plenty to eat and could possibly need to be replaced sooner than I planned if they get too big, too fast.

It's definitely been a constant learning experience.

I threw out feed. With this warm spell, the BG are feeding almost like they should in spring.

Sounds like you're doing great, Tracy! I have only one Christmas tree to add, but will supplement with small trees & brush from my property.

My number one priority is more dense habitat around CNBG spawning beds so the little guys can survive, that will be the focus of my efforts. TP and TFS to be stocked after temps warm.

Only really large CNBG are hitting feed now, along with some HSB. Much slower than last summer, but feed does get eaten with enthusiasm by the HSB. Few LMB in evidence around feeder.

I expected mine to pick up since the weather has warmed, but it's still really slow. I'm only throwing maybe 10 handfuls a day, and it's mainly smaller fish feeding. Don't know where my bigger fish are. I guess they're satisfied eating fry, and my LMB are ghosts lately.

Tried to fill my new pond with well water yesterday. I gave up after 5 hours. Just gonna have to wait for rain and snow.

New ponds take an unusual amount of water. Depending on the soil and compaction factor, they soak up a lot of water initially.

I was gonna wait to dig in spring but the guy was about to start a new contract this week. Now we just get flurries, no rain. Shouldn't take much for a tiny pond slightly larger than 1/8 acre.

wannapond, I toyed with filling my pond by using the yard spigot (regualr ole' well and well pump) and found that the pond would gain about 1 inch a day from bone dry empty. My pond is about 1/4 acre so it should grossly compare to a 1/8 acre pond when both are empty. As the pond gets more full the fill rate would slow down exponentailly...I figured it would take about one year to fill it up with my garden hose and surely it would fill by rain soon enough. The pond only filled to halfway by April of 2017 after being completed late 2016, then in May, it filled the rest of the way and well over the overflow pipe in on day! I was glad the wait was over, I thought it would never fill up.

I might connect directly to my 1" well poly pipe and get the full 10gpm with 1"poly to the pond. That might fill it in a few weeks. Maybe..

My pump will do 120 gallons/minute. I can raise a quarter acre pond about 0.8 inch per hour after it's 3/4 full. It slows after that. That would be about 1.6 inches per day at 10 gpm, running 24/7. That's without evaporation or absorption. Yes, it will take a few weeks and lots of kilowatt-hours of electricity.

Sunk Christmas tree plus brush near CNBG spawning area, probably need to adjust location more precisely re Bob Lusk comments tonight. Three stupid cormorants, two beautiful eagles seen. Visibility near minimum for my BOW, around 2 feet.

Took out 11 inch LMB, caught& released a fat 18.5. Slow fishing overall.

That is nice 120gpm? My property has 3 other wells that were abandoned due to low supply of water. Of course I just bought it last summer. The new well they drilled seems to have plenty of water, just not at that rate.

The couple thousand gallons that's in there now doesn't appear to be going anywhere. I guess all clay helps. We tried the sheeps foot but it kept getting clogged so we stopped using it a 3rd of the way.

Not for me they aren't, even though I have both in my BOW. When I get anything bigger than 8 lb then I'll be pretty sure it's a Florida!

The differences (other than top size) are small, even experts can't be certain of id just by appearance.

Never heard of this. Can a pond builder comment on what one does when a sheepsfoot needs to be used to intermix and compact lifts of clay but the user can't use it because the clay plugs or 'fills' it?

Are we talking about 2 different 'sheepsfoot' tools?

No pond builder but I have built a few ponds. grin

Too wet to compact properly.

Soil too dry will not compact properly and too wet will just squish (a technical term) around the compaction device rather than compress vertically.

One way to help that is to mix in some dry clay to take up some of the excess moisture or wait till it dries to the proper level.

We find this same phenomenon farming. We have little concerns of compaction on dry soils. Saturated soils if we have a wet harvest make terrible ruts in the fields to contend with, but do not really cause compaction problems as the water acts as a lubricant and the soil just squishes around. But at certain moist moisture levels excess trips across a field will cause problematic compaction layers. Best (or worst if you do not want it) compaction happens at moist but not saturated soil moisture levels.

Make a ball of clay with your hands. If it will not stick together it is too dry to compact. If it tends to squish between your fingers it is too wet. Somewhere between those two stages is just right.

I'm just hoping it doesn't leak. My pond builder said he guarantees it won't leak. I hope he's right! I've got his dozer still in my yard. Isn't possession nine-tenths of the law? I could clear some trees with that D6...
