Mike that will do it every time!
Went down to the pond a few minutes ago in a 25 mph wind. In the past I have caught fish with the wind in your face from the bank. Wind blows bait in an fish take advantage of this caught the first bass on a 1/16 oz. curly tail crappie jig. Bass 4-5# ! 18” from there they got small 8-10” , 19 of them until it started raining..... I went home... no crappie tho.

It's amazing how small a bait really big bass will eat. My personal best LMB weighed a smidge over 8# and came on a 3" curltail grub. My best SMB weighed 7# and she ate a 1/2 oz rattletrap. I cant tell you how many big bass I've had weighed in during my years as a tournament director that were caught on micro sized baits like shakey head jigs and 3" frenchfry plastic. Just because they're big doesnt keep them from taking advantage of a feeding opportunity, regardless of the size of the bait. Protein is protein, I guess.
After I caught my breath and got over my mild heart attack, I had to laugh at myself. Then I was just thrilled at least one of my bass is still cracking heads.

Yep. Well, they get really big & are eager biters. And many folks think crappie are great eating, though I'm not a fan of the taste. Cold water BG are hard to beat for flavor in my book.
If somehow pondmeisters had crappie that wouldn't take over the lake...

We are now getting a much needed rain, about 0.3 inch so far. A good rain, by recent standards.

I am pretty sure we got 2" or better with the rains along with tornado warnings during the early morning hrs here. And while at the pond yesterday with the high winds I checked the water temps with a 57 at the surface and 55 at 4'. That is quite a bit warmer than it was a few weeks ago. And the fish were feeding at the feeders. I was surprised with the water temps being in the mid to high 50's. Pat, I should have wet a hook!
Do not judge me by the politicians in my City, State or Federal Government.

John, I don't even know what normal rainfall for deep east Texas per year is but….you got me thinking and I went ahead and totaled everything I logged this year and I have had an unbelievable 104 1/2 inches of rain this year!!!! That's crazy.

I don't know exactly where you are, Flame, but the normal for Lufkin, TX is 50 inches per year, about two inches higher than here.

John, I am on the Louisiana border about 55 miles farther east of Lufkin, Texas so I more than doubled the average this year. I got 21 1/2 inch in February alone!! I had 50 inches before the end of June!! I know I got 12 inches in just September!! Hard to believe. The pond didn't really start going over the spillway good until this month but it had gotton over 2 feet low before that. PAT, you got a great Christmas present!! A FULL POOL !!!! Yaaaay!!

I'm just north of I10 and 2 miles (as the crow flies) from the Tx/La line. This morning's rainfall was just over 1.5", bringing my total in the last 6 weeks alone to just over 14". Luckily, most of it has come in small amounts, but that toad choaker a few weeks back dumped over 6" and the pond was out of it's banks and flowing across the yard. I'm sitting here watching fish breaking water all over the pond, so it wasn't a cold rain. Bout time to go throw some feed!!
I called Toledo Bend this morning to check the flood gates. As of yesterday, the lake level was 172+'. Both generators running 24/7 and 5 gates open to 1 foot. The Sabine has been at flood stage since that torrent and now it'll be out of its banks....again! Thanks a lot Sabine River Authority!!

What did I do at the pond today. Nothing.. I ran the chainsaw all morning around the farm, opening up roads etc.. So, my time at the pond was just recuperating. Enjoyed the quiet, except for some geese far overhead. Luckily they leave my little BOW alone. Water temp is 44* still a few inches low, but almost full. I’m thinking there is no “bad” time to sit next to a pond.

I got a little over a 1/2 inch of rain this morning and it was pretty warm this afternoon when I went by the pond. For the first time in a long while, I had a fair amount of FHM activity, so I threw out some feed to see what would happen and I probably had a few hundred or more FHM coming up to feed. Probably been over 2 months since they've done that. It was fun to see.

Bob, how close are you to full? I may have missed it earlier. Are you getting close? How’s it holding? Hope your leak went away, or was just the soil sucking up the water. Jeff

Jeff, I wish I was close to full. Lol! I've been getting enough rain to keep things fairly wet, but not enough to gain much. I'm probably up about a foot since my last report. I'm at about 8.5', and still have over 10' to go. It's still doing about the same, the longer it stays around the same level, the slower it drops. I don't think it's dropped much more than .25" a day over the last month or so, and most of the time it is less than that. I still haven't had a rain big enough to give me any run off from the area above the sediment pond. I'm trying to get started on clearing out some of the under growth from that area, in hopes of getting more run off.

Thanks Zep. I think do to their thirsty nature they contribute to some water loss in the drier months, but they also keep a lot of the water shaded and cooler. They dump millions of leaves in every fall, but are pretty to look at. We like the peaceful feeling. Bob, it’s hard to believe you’ve missed some of these hard rains we’ve had in St Louis. Your place is a little like mine. I always see big storms barreling down on the farm, then they magically divide and somehow go around our farm. Eventually you’ll get the series of gullywashers you need. Jeff

Jeff, it's happened to me so many times, split and go around me, I just have to laugh any more. lol! A lot of time I see it break up right as it gets to me and reform on the other side of me. lol! The pond is right at 16 months old now and has only had run off from above the sediment pond 2 times.
