Frank, I don't know about what size TFS survives our winters. My seining in early June shows different sizes of TFS in the net. inch and a half to 5 or 6" sizes. They seem to spawn often at the pond. Yesterday afternoon I was at one of the feeders when I saw a school of TFS about a foot or so under the surface and they looked to be in the 3 to 4" range. The say they do not eat fish food but I always see TFS around the feeders at feeding times. I don't see them eat it but why else would they be there when the feeders go off? I figured they might be eating the feeder dust that gets thrown out when the feeder goes off. Hay! I am no expert that for sure.

Frank, what are your Tp doing? you still seeing them? I have not seen any since a month ago when I saw some 3" ones sunning in some shallows. Concerned my Tp may have been food for the lmb at stocking time since they were in the 6" size at the time I stocked them. I think some made it but I may need to stock the harder to find larger size when stocking next year. My water temps were 58 yesterday at 1 to 4'

Tracy, haven't seen TP since early October electroshocking, but that doesn't mean much. I rarely observe them around feeders and almost never catch any. Hope they haven't all died of cold yet, or at least got eaten by LMB.

I don't have the numbers of big LMB you do, so 6" size TP would probably survive longer in my BOW. Still, bigger would be better for reproduction.

Seems that bigger fish in general can take cold better than smaller fish of same species, which is why I asked about TFS survival from last year's cold winter. You and I both have BOW with good depth, which helps.

My water is less fertile than yours, which is one reason I haven't stocked TFS. Will have to up my game in this regard!

There are reports that TFS will eat some fish food just not high in the diet chain (don't eat a lot of feed).

Thanks Eric. I suspected they were eating some of the Aquamax but could not swear by it. I will see them around the feeders when it's near the time the feeders go off.

I received a letter from Overton's fisheries last month where it said if you are interested in stocking TFS next spring then you need to place your order now.

Frank, my pond for the most part has had 18 to 21" of green water visibility and a couple of times it was even greener with less visibility up until this year after adding the Alum. Since then the water has had 22" for most of the time to where it is now at 35". The TFS seemed to have been doing well with the less fertile water. It has remained green through out all of it and remains green today but not as green as I have seen in the past. I hope this information helps in your decision making.

I called Overton's yesterday to place TFS order but haven't heard back. Bob Lusk says that I'd be wiser to buy in the spring than now, given my geographic location. Might get too cold for them to survive winter in my BOW.

Sure wish I had your fertility. Don't think viz has ever been less than 30 inches, and usually closer to 40 despite liming & fertilizer. On the plus side, it doesn't get muddy no matter how much rain falls.

What did I do at my pond today?? well, a walk around has revealed a GSH die-off of some sort over the last 2 weeks is taking place..
Stocked about 300 3-4" from Anderson's.. 6-8-10 a day floating.. yesterday was 27, today 11. Guessing Saprolegnia…. fungus no doubt. Looks to me like handling issues on their end but they say no way, must be water issues on my end. Anyone ever see something similar???
EDIT: GSH stocked 40 days ago +/- a few days..
2nd EDIT: Just looked back, GSH were stocked only 20 days ago!

Great 3 hours fishing! Friend & I culled 15 and put back 3 too big to keep, including one that had to be pushing 5 pounds. Also one HSB that fought much harder than its 14 inches. Now have removed 79 LMB the last two months.

Saw some TP in the shallow back bay. Lethargic, I doubt they'll make it much longer.

I set out otter traps after finding otter scat and a trail at the dam. It seems to be a never ending battle with the otters and beavers. I am still trying to figure out why Texas Parks and Wildlife would restock otters into E. Texas.

Guess they figured that fishing was too good.

I seem to be able to control the Otters and Beavers after I realize there back "again". frown Once again I have to thank Highflyer for teaching me what to look for and how to set up the traps. My pond is a few hundred yds from a Bayou where a lot of different animals roam. And I think Frank is right. As I herd Bob Lusk say, when there is a lot of forage (fish) in a pond then mother nature steps in to correct it. Dam Otters!! All I need now is a thick scruffy beard, thick fur coat with ice and snow all over me and I would feel like a real trapper. Problem is it's all just a pain in the arse!

Just so long as the fur coat is an otter fur coat.

Beaver fur is nice, too. And we shouldn't forget goose down jackets for those really cold days!

Culled 11 and returned 6 too big to keep, longer than 14 inches, today in 3 hours of fishing. LMB and a few very large CNBG still taking pellets. No HSB caught.

Canada geese back in numbers, up from 3 a few days ago to 14. A couple of cormorants, too.

Maybe it's just a random event, but now that we've culled 90 smaller LMB, seems they are harder to catch. Starting out it was easy to catch 5 or 6 small bass for every nice one, seems more like 3 or even just 2 to 1 today. Maybe me & my fishing buddies are making a dent!

Sounds good Frank. But maybe it is time to build a duck blind and hunt a few Geese.

Tracy, no need for a blind to shoot these geese. They aren't all that afraid of humans. Cormorants are much more wary, thankfully there are only a few.

Goose Gumbo is a great way to get rid of the geese. smile People who say they don't like to eat goose and or duck have not eaten it in a Cajun Gumbo. I could tell you a story about all that. Short story, 5 gals of the Gumbo was gone by daybreak.

I'll have to give that a try when hunting is legal!

As for today, my buddy & I had slow fishing. Cloudy, windy, cold water, not much of a bite. In two hours we caught nine LMB, eight culled (under 14") and one 3 lber we released. I had two other good bass on but hook pulled out.

ALso noticed several TP floating near the surface, clearly in trouble. Surprised that they made it this long considering it's been pretty cold.

Goose season just opened for the second split. You will need a duck stamp, hunting license and a good shotgun with some steel or tungsten shot. #2 or #3 will work. You can buy a small game non resident hunting lic for your place in E. Texas. Several hundred bucks cheaper than the standard non resident hunting lic. Ck your daily limit allowed and you can keep two days limit in the freezer. Two hunters, that most likely would remove 8 geese from the pond in a weekend hunt.

Suggest you not advertise it to my wifey, she feels sorry for anything I bring home from a hunt and will only eat wild game if I don't tell her what I cooked. smile

My cnbg are still pretty active, saw them feeding along the windy shoreline yesterday, busting the surface, so I hand feed some and like I said they were pretty active. The feeders went off while I was there and saw a lot of feeding activity but the feed trained lmb and hsb were not so active. I only saw a couple of them feed.

Have not seen the Osprey in a few days so I am guessing the Tp are gone for the most part. I did see an aggressive Kingfisher though.

Frank, what are you and your buddies using to catch your lmb this time of year? My visibility is still pretty bad at less than 12 inches. Only place I seem to be able to catch any lmb is near the feeder area but now I have a GBH that stands in the water next to the feeder every am and pm. I'm sure that is even spooking the lmb also!!

Louis (best friend, golf and drinking buddy, and expert fisherman) and I did some harvesting, barely scratching the pond's load of fish. Largest bluegill, 9 inches, 12 ounces. Largest channel cat, 10 pounds and 25 inches. Louis caught all the bluegills (I got skunked though lots of bites) and the big catfish. I caught a 4.8 pound channel at 24 inches and an oddly small hybrid blue. All catfish on wiener. Pond is twenty months old and fed.

James, our only success was on small jigworms. Very light jighead, 1/32 oz, attached to 4 inch red shad powerworm. Moved slowly, hits were subtle. Once I concluded that I was hung, but it turned out to be a big LMB that hardly moved. Lost her, unfortunately.

My buddy tried a plastic lizard, a hot bait six weeks ago, without a single bite. My BOW doesn't get muddy no matter how much rain, but it does get a little murky. Next time I go fishing during winter it will be on a sunny day so temps rise a bit in the afternoon.
