I'm not so sure about that, Flame. At our old place, which was right on the Sabine River, we were infested with mud daubers, and those nasty red river wasps that will run you out of a boat if you mess with them. The kind that build plate sized nests in cypress branches right where you want to cast a bait. I was going thru a couple cans of wasp spray every summer keeping them off and out from under the porches.

Today was "Rake FA Day". Took my oversized yard rake, turned upside down, and combed thru the emergent grasses and water willow to gently lift as much FA off the perimeter of the pond as I could reach. Only took about 30 minutes and I removed about 30 pounds of scum. Still some floating around, but I'll get it once the aerator pushes it to the banks again.

I still get wasp nests around my house. Just not down by the pond on the boat dock 200 ft. away. For whatever the reason...I'm just glad wasps don't bother me on the dock while fishing!!

I'll be removing the perforated board at the top of my water control box in the big pond and putting the plastic storage boxes that are on the fixed dock up on the dam in preparation for the 5+ inches of rain predicted through the weekend. That should flush out the ponds, wetlands, and streams around here!

Wow, do you need the rain?
Last week in total we got 9-10" of rain, with a big plunge during a bad storm on Tuesday night (lots of straight line winds, 5 tornados in mid MI but fortunately category 0 or 1) and then a little more on some subsequent fronts that came through.

Pond overflowed significantly (seems like these 100 year rains are happening about every year lately) The woods fills with water during overflow. No issue but I'm thinking having an overflow conduit would be nice just to direct it more quickly into the woods and where I want it. As it comes up it also flows into my front yard and due to the additional daily rain for a week the grass is dead by the time the water finds its way down into the soil.

Knowing what we have been talking about today about fish finding a way to swim out of ponds I looked in the puddles in the woods for any small fish and didn't see any. My small fish are mostly GSH minnows and they would have been pretty easy to spot due to the fact that they never sit still. No perch and no RES seen, perhaps because they prefer the bottom?

If only the goldfish would swim into the woods...

Don't need any more rain. Already got about 2" with over 4" more expected. Glad house is high and dry!

This week I mowed the grass at 30" below full pool. If the pond ever comes up again, it will look like a pond in a lawn.

Since the rain is going to be nonstop for a few days and the pond is likely to rise 5+ feet and overflow I went out and pulled the larger weeds which were beginning to be submerged. A royal PITA to hand pull but no real other choice as the water already came up a few feet and has 2 more to go to reach normal level.

Water is literally pouring in on the side with the the drain tile for the fields along with the other field runoff we get through the yard. I'm guessing we're getting 60-80 GPM if not more and since the ground is saturated I expect to have a the other 2 feet filled before evening.

On the plus side, when the pond overflows into the yard it pushes most of the loose material onto the grass and leaves it there.

Meanwhile, in northeast Texas we need rain. Sigh.

I figured some of this might slide up thru y'all.... guess not.

Since everything I do out in the yard is literally out by the pond I guess this qualifies. I've been converting a single car 12×20 metal awning into an enclosed building. Been working on it several weekends now. Sides are done, elevated floor is done and framed in one end with double 4 foot doors today....all between rain showers....sorry guys. Pond is full again.

I started the day with hand feeding Aquamax lmb to the HSB and LMB. And there will be some larger sized CNBG that join in. Then I disked up a one acre food plot next to the pond and planted some winter wheat, oats and peas. This one acre spot has been a food plot for years and is well used by the deer and rabbits. We got a good rain yesterday afternoon so the food plot should be popping up in a few days. We don't hunt this food plot, it's just a place that gets a lot of deer activity year round and is a nice place to view next to the pond.

Sounds like my kind of place, Tracy. If I weren't in a residential area, I'd be tempted to do something like that.

Year before last or maybe last year lol, I sat on the hill top which is about 100 yds away from that food plot and watched a nice 8pt feeding in the corner of the plot as I watched 50 or so ducks come into the pond. They came in groups of 10 or so. I was a nice picture all in all. I have several food plots I am working on right now. Have about 6 more to get disked up and seeded in the next few weeks. After years of experimenting on what seeds to plant I have narrowed it down to Elbon Rye, Winter wheat and a few oats. I add the peas I have left over from spring plots. They like new pea sprouts but they don't last very long.

Got at least 4" but my rain gauge is now under a tree (put it up a long time ago). All the ponds are full. It came mostly slow and steady and most of my bodies of water are not all that muddy. Settling ponds/wetlands are working and the plant cover growing in most of the watersheds is thick despite the previous dry spell. I will get a more accurate rain total when I speak with a couple neighbors that have their rain gauges in better locations. Streams and creeks are running good!

I need to do the same. Will be working on them this coming weekend. The GS and the HBG need to get thinned out in my BOW.

RES, YP, GS, FHM (no longer), HBG (going away), SMB, and HSB (only one seen in 5 yrs) Restocked HSB (2020) Have seen one of these.
I think that's about all I should put in my little pond.

I watched it rain some more.

First time in a long time we actually got enough to cause runoff from the next door neighbor's property. Water has now reached the overflow so I'm getting a little flush in the pond.

Still looking at around 18-24" visibility with the new water. Feeding was a little off, but I expected it would be.

Holding my breath and praying this isn't a sign of things to come. Three storms in the Atlantic, another building in the gulf. Two floods in two years is quite enough. My heart goes out to all those folks in the Carolinas. They're about to catch hell.

My wife and daughter will be at an international horse show this week.

In North Carolina. frown

Fortunately, it's in the western part of the state least likely to get hammered by Florence.

Are those too big for yourr SMB Shorty? If so, I may face the same problem some day.

What about adding a half dozen HSB? I happen to know someone near you raising some. grin

I sure hope they have a safe trip. This storm could easily be as bad as Harvey.

To be honest, I'm surprised the horse show has not been canceled. Hope they have a nice, safe trip.

Some of the GSH I’ve been catching must be too large for my SMB. They must be too large for my HSB too. Although my HSB are only rumored to be in my pond, as I actually haven’t seen one since they were stocked in October of 2015.. I’ve got millions of GSH..

SetterGuy, I also have some elusive HSB. I stocked mine in October of 2016 and I am yet to catch or see one!
