Then I mowed my grass and ran the weed eater around the pond, wanting to get it done before it started raining....sweated my hind end off....disappointment #2.

After dinner I decided to bait my two clover leafs with some of the GFC and set them out while I dunked a night crawler to try to catch a few BHC. Caught two right off the bat then the bite just quit....#3

So I pull up my first trap only to find a dang crappie in it. Now I've got a real mutt pond!

After 6 or 7 sets, this is the first crappie I've caught. About 4.5" long. I was hoping the Harvey flood had spared me of those fish, but my luck ain't that good. It went in the tank with the 2 BHC to be released into the bayou down the road. Here's the list of known species now...GSF, BG, RES, Warmouth, Pumpkinseed, LMB, BHC and now Crappie. Doubt seriously it's a black and what's the odds it was all by it's lonesome.

Harvey messed with a LOT of ponds all across southeast Tx and southwest LA, Mike. Sorry to hear that you got some unwanted guests.

I didn't realize that pumpkinseed live that far south, always thought they were Yankee fish. Now that you have some LMB, maybe your intruders will end up feeding them. BG outbreed almost all other sunfish with the exception of CNBG.

My "fun" time at the pond was trying to get my generator started. No matter how hard I pulled, no matter how many times I pulled, nothing doing. Sweated like a pig, extremely irritated... And then I realized that it was switched to the OFF position. shocked

That sounds like something I would do!! Lol. Thanks for the chuckle. I needed that.

I call them pumpkinseed, but that may not be their real name. Body like a BG (broad sided) lots of bright green, almost flourescent coloring and a thin white stripe at the end of the earlobe, like a RES would have, but white. Watched two of them this evening dancing around in circles like they wanted to mate. Biggest I've seen is maybe 3".

The LMB are trying their hardest to make life rough for anything shorter than 3 inches. My biggest, maybe just over 12", made several passes through the feeding fish, then I saw other commotion in the main bedding area that had to be bass. Busting heads in inches of water. They keep at it like this and I may have a lunker in no time. They look pretty healthy from what I can see in a split second. I hope they're treating the BHC just as harshly and eat every crappie they come across.

Ive been watching this BG tending a nest on and off for a while and I hate to admit it, but curiousity just got the better of me. I rigged a small piece of gulp worm on a lite wire hook, no weigh, no bobber and used my crappie rod to swing about 10 feet of line out. After about three tries to get it to fall in the nest he finally bit. I've personally stocked maybe 25 BG from 3-5" maybe two months ago. The biggest being a nice looking male. If this is that same fish, he's done very well for himself, being every bit of 7". If he is one of my miracle fish, I'm wondering now how many others are in there with him. Haven't seen anything like him while feeding, tho. He was a bit thin, but I attribute that to him being on the bed. Put him right back.

Great progress, Mike! If the LMB keep BG numbers under control, you will have some real beauties soon.

My bride & I replenished the feeders today. Incredibly hot, 98 to 100 all the way to the pond. On the positive side, they still ate pretty eagerly, though not quite as voraciously as a month ago when water temps were 5 to 10 F lower.

Have yet to see a HSB or TP around the feeders, but neither have I seen any floaters. Viz still around 3 feet, a little murky for my BOW. Nice weed growth around the edges, but it's good that most of the pond drops off sharply! Observed plenty of small fish in the shallow weeds, mostly BG/CNBG, which is encouraging after the recruitment problems I've had the last couple of years.

Only negative: GBH population has doubled from one to two. They don't get along very well, big one chased the smaller one to the other side of water.

Raccoon marks all over the feeders, desperate to get in. Ants have succeeded in doing so in a couple of places, will have to take steps.

Try greasing the legs of the feeder.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

I almost never saw hsb at the feeder when I had threadfin shad. But I lost those Tfs this winter and now the hsb come to the feeders.

What kind of grease? No ants in my feeder but have been a bunch under the feeder. Feeder does set out in the rain so don't want any chemical being washed into the pond. What is recommended?? I have actually watched GBH fight each other for territory on Lake Sam Rayburn. They can get brutal!! My GBH actually ran a commorant off my pond awhile back!!

I went out this morning using the same rig as last evening while the wife was starting breakfast. Just walking the edge all around the pond. No significant bites, but I did see a very diverse mix.

Naturally, more GSF than anything, but not much more. Also caught BG, one small WMS, and one small RES. Mostly in the 2.5-4" range. The BG, even at that size, are already sporting that humped forehead, so I'm assuming they're growing well. GSF all had bloated bellies so there's no doubt they're feeding well. Probably around 25 fish in both outings.

I have to finish the roof on my outside kitchen today so may try again later after it gets warmer and too hot to swing a framing gun.

I'm liking that I haven't spent a dime on fish and have what looks like a good mix. I may invest in a few larger RES to help them out tho.

As a side note, Ive numbered my three LMB, the smallest being #1 @ 10.5" largest (last one I stocked) is #3 @ just under 13 when they were introduced. I know water magnifies everything you see swimming but I swear #3 looks like it's grown 2" already. It's claimed the spawning ground as it's regular haunt and I see it daily.

Funny how LMB will do that, Mike. I have one in my pond that has established its own particular kill zone under the weeds next to the dock. We regularly see & hear an explosion there as it nails a BG.

What's really cool is being able to sit at my dining table, looking out at the pond, seeing all the bulls circling their nests and watch it pull up like a dragster on the starting line and then explode over 10 feet in just a nanosecond to claim another victim. Amazing

Since I have finally brought my little pond king paddle wheel boat to its new home, I took the opportunity to get out in the middle this morning and get a more accurate depth reading.

Looks like my dirt guy underestimated the depth. All this time I was going by his info that the pond was 12 foot deep, but it's only 10.5, which also reduces my average depth to about 8 feet. Luckily it's at full pool so it's an accurate reading.

Unfortunately, I've lost a quarter acre foot of water instantly. But the brighter side is now I know exactly how deep my diffuser will be and what kind of psi I'll truly need to get optimum output. Gonna really have to keep an eye on my biomass since that capacity has now been reduced as well.

Similar story here, Mike. My BOW is supposed to be max 24 - 25 feet deep at full pool, but Justin Stane mapped it out to be around 18 - 19 feet. Even correcting a couple of feet for summer drought, that's several feet less than estimated.

Good thing about it....the smaller it gets, the easier it is to take care of!!

I'm wondering how much a quarter acre foot of water reduction affects carrying capacity. Can't be by too much with aeration (when I get put in) and feeding.

Fantastic Tommy! A pumphouse after my own heart. Here's mine recently installed for the air pump. I have not figured out how to incorporate the "moon" yet...

We're gonna have to get a septic tank built for our new home on the pond. Hopefully for indoor toilets!

Justin Stane came over to put together and deploy artificial habitat. Good guy, good attitude, my wife remarked afterward how much she liked him.

We created two shoreline fishing spots for the grandkids, plus enhanced a point on the island, plus sunk a rootball and an artificial Christmas tree near CNBG spawning beds. Very productive morning.
