My bride & I replenished all the TH feeders at our BOW. Good thing we did, as two of them had run out of food, and one was jammed!

Visibility good, about 30 inches. Fair amount of algae, so the recently stocked TP should do well. Fish still respond to feed eagerly, but if the temps stay elevated this will likely change.

Still no bird sign, a welcome change from the GBH, cormorants, and geese earlier this spring!

Hey all sorry it's been a minute I been busy needless to say. Hope everyone is doing good. Thought I would post what we did at the pond this last weekend.

It's a 16x21 pole barn not quite done just yet but gonna be for fire wood and 4 wheelers. Plus I have an extension on the side of it for my bass tracker once it's all done. I will have a few more pics coming once we get it all done this next weekend.

Wouldn't take any money for helping us and said you never know I may need your help one day! That's a true neighbor right there!! Gonna do other half of roof and front this weekend and maybe do the bass boat section not sure if we will have time. Plus it's fricken hot here now!! smile I don't want my dad to push it to hard in this heat cause he wont stop unless I make him... dang guy! He doesn't have a quit button... smile

This morning I transplanted about a ton of northern Ark river stone around the spawning area of my pond. Some of these suckers were close to 50 lb stones. Unfortunately, a couple of them decided they wanted to be deeper than I planned and took a walk right off the ledge and didn't stop till they were out in the middle.

Then I soaked a couple of traps and caught some pretty little shellcrackers to add to my mix of mutts.

Fed again this afternoon and am seeing loads of fry of one sort or another. I've got FHM, GSF and BG all spawning now. Fry ranging from 1/4" to 1 1/2". Too small to identify species, but it's good to see them.

Hey CMM, What kind of grass is that growing in your pond? I need sumadat!! I'm virtually nill in the cover area. Want something that'll stay shallow. That stuff would work well.

Those trees should make good cover, too. How deep did you set them?

Yup....according to Wikipedia anyway. From what I gather, it can grow to depths of 5-6 feet? Does that sound right? If so, I'll have to pass on APW. I need something that'll grow to about 3 feet deep. Probably not gonna find that.

The pond on my old duck lease was full of some kind of lilly. My brother said it was banana lilly, IDK. It sure did draw in the ducks tho, and the fish seemed to love being in it.

I attempted to find an air leak in the line which feeds my aeration system. 5 out of 6 diffusers are doing pretty good but that six one is getting little air and naturally it is the one line that travels the farthest. If it was leaking in the water I would see it bubbling but it's not. So, now I will have to back track about 2,000' of line and connections. Not sure if there is a large spot leaking or a little at every connection. There is a little air leaking at or near the connections as it comes off the compressor, but not enough to really cause a problem. I added a little soapy water and found bubbles but I don't think it is enough to stop that 6th diffuser from working. Will Darn it, another task that was not in my plans.

MIke, I am not sure what kind of grass it is, but if you want some, come on over, I'll let you have a start of it. There is probably at least two kinds, one I am sure is a type of burr reed. It gets about 2' tall, does well in an inch of water and at wet shore line and can be fully submerged for several days without dying.

The trees are artificial Christmas tree sections. I get them at auctions for a buck or two. I set them anywhere from 6' to 2'. I have even bunched branches together and staked them into the mud in 1' of water.

Ah, I thought he was talking about the taller stuff right at the shore. Yes, the floating plant is APW. I love it and don't find that it grows too deep at my place, maybe 2' or so. Maybe in very clear water it would grow deeper?

My bass and bluegill both stage under that stuff; drop a popper in or a weedless fly, wiggle it a time or two and if something doesn't hit it through the weeds, it will almost surely hit it when you get to the edge!

What's been your experience with artificial trees? Do fish use them as well as natural brush? How long do they last in the water?

Anthropic,

Like any other structure, it depends on where I put it as to how quickly it is used and by what species. I like the artificial trees due to the dense structure that can shelter lots of small fry. I fished one of the artificial trees I placed on Sunday last night, I got 3 bg around 7 inches, 1 bg 9" and an 18" LM (on a tiny little nymph!). That one is about 8' from shore, but in only about 3' of water and is very close to my main feeding area. Another set of 3 sections I placed 3 weeks ago I haven't been able to catch anything off of yet. It's in deeper water, on the other side of the pond near a drop off between a spawning area and deep water. I thought it would attract fish.

As for how long they last, I don't have an answer for that. They certainly last longer than the cedar trees I put in. I have branches in shallow water that I placed over 2 years ago that have no deterioration I can see. They get lots of "stuff" on them, bugs, snails, algae and whatnot, but don't drop needles. I suppose the metal frame will rust at some point.

Thanks. I've secured an artificial Christmas tree & plan to deploy it near CNBG spawning beds which are devoid of any cover. Gotta be strategic! cool

Had my Ohio friend over for some fishing at my BOW. He just about melted in the heat, but had a blast catching LMB on a spinnerbait.

Despite high temps, fish still take feed eagerly. Sadly, Big CNBG got mostly wiped out by fungus last fall. I haven't seen one exceed 7 inches this year, while last year the bigguns were over 8 inches frown

On the plus side, population of small CNBG has exploded & YOY are everywhere. Last year smaller CNBG were very scarce due to poor recruitment.

LMB are naive about lures & extremely aggressive. Noticed that the side with 3 feeders was MUCH better than side with only 1, and I don't think it is just that LMB take feed. They are also targeting the CNBG that come to be fed!

Bass were heavy. Most seemed to be in the 15 to 18 inch range, around 2.5 to 4 lb. Very stocky, husky, hard fighters. No sign of parasites or fungus. Most of what we caught were feed trained N LMB, I'm sure. The overpopulation of small LMB has been cut sharply since last fall, likely by the N LMB stocked back then.

The good side of the lake not only has more feeders, it also gets evening shade from the pine trees. The other side gets shade in the morning, but not after. That could be a factor, especially when fishing in the evening.

PS I'm gonna mostly shut down LMB fishing for a few months, water is getting too hot & they fight HARD. Also, of course, I don't want them to get lure shy! But I do have an idea: Take the hooks off a topwater Jitterbug & cast that. I caught several nice LMB on topwaters, awesome to see the blowups, but the double trebles were tough to get out quickly. Going hookless means having the fun of seeing the hits without harming LMB nor teaching them (and their progeny) to be passive.

Hmmmmm.....just where in our great state are you?? I just may have to take a trip and take you up on the APW offer!!

Someone told me a few weeks ago about driving a pipe in the ground at water's edge and to tap on it before I started feeding. Well I finally decided to give it a try. Put it in earlier this week. It's absolutely crazy!!! I tap on it with a small rock and fish come from EVERYWHERE!! Even my three LMB! But they aren't there for the pellets!!

I've definitely got to get some cover down, but it's hard to deploy with such steep sides on the pond. And I don't want to put too much. Those 3 LMB got a lot of eating to do!!! Two of them have apparently become buddies as they're always together now.

Hey, Mike. I live in the Shreveport area, but my BOW is near Marshall, Texas. Which means I get to stock TP!

You'd be welcome to drop by & fish when temps aren't quite so hot. I like to hear other people's perspective on ponds & fishing, it is quite educational to a newbie like myself.

Sounds like your pond is doing better, I remember you were concerned when the fish stopped feeding for a bit. Good to hear things have improved!

That sounds like a plan in the making!! I'll try to talk the wife into taking a little road trip up your way sometime soon.

I guess my initial concern with the high surface temps were partially unfounded. Apparently these fish don't mind the warm water. The banks are littered with small fish in inches of water when I get home and they're ganged up waiting where I feed them. If i walk the bank theres a big wad of puppies following me.

I need to figure out a way to measure temps at different depths. I'm guessing that they must have a sufficient sanctuary out in deeper water. Still find one floating occasionally but I guess that's to be expected as well.

From this point on I'll let the fish tell me what's happening and hope I can get it resolved before it's too late. Hopefully I'll be securing an aeration system before too long.

What I did today was get disappointed.

I stopped by the local co-op and picked a sack of Aquamax 500. Decided I wanted to use it instead of the Game Fish Chow. They ate it pretty well, but the smaller fish had a tough time due to the consistent size of the pellets, where GFC has mixed sizes...disappointment #1.

Then I mowed my grass and ran the weed eater around the pond, wanting to get it done before it started raining....sweated my hind end off....disappointment #2.

After dinner I decided to bait my two clover leafs with some of the GFC and set them out while I dunked a night crawler to try to catch a few BHC. Caught two right off the bat then the bite just quit....#3

So I pull up my first trap only to find a dang crappie in it. Now I've got a real mutt pond!

After 6 or 7 sets, this is the first crappie I've caught. About 4.5" long. I was hoping the Harvey flood had spared me of those fish, but my luck ain't that good. It went in the tank with the 2 BHC to be released into the bayou down the road. Here's the list of known species now...GSF, BG, RES, Warmouth, Pumpkinseed, LMB, BHC and now Crappie. Doubt seriously it's a black and what's the odds it was all by it's lonesome.
