Hello guys,

Last spring I bought a new house in midland michigan in which has an pond on it. The pond is about 80 feet wide and 180 feet long the average depth is 6 feet with a 15 foot drop off in the middle. I wasn’t able to fish in it much last year as I gutted the house and was trying to get it done so we had a place to live in saying that my cousin lives next door and he was over fishing every day. He pulled out a Ton of perch ranging from 4” to 12” in size. On two different days he pulled out one bluegill that was somewhere between 8 and 10”. In the little amount of time I have been able to spend out there I have also noticed FHM along the banks, painted turtles, crayfish, etc. Which I think is a good thing. I have little to no pond knowledge so I’m looking for any advice knowledge I can get I have been on every site, watched you tube videos and have been reading through this forum to get as much knowledge as I can. In saying that I have friends who have ponds and have also called them and was able to keep the pond looking pretty good last summer. I had three algae blooms and managed to keep them at bay. As the summer went on I then got weeds all through the pond making it tough to fish. I’m looking into getting an arreator but have no idea what to get so I’m in the process of trying to figure out one that is best for me. Any advice would be appreciated. I also thing that I may have some stunted perch as most of the fish that were pulled out were in the 4 to 5 inch range. I’m wondering your guys opinion on that and how to fix it. Do I get more FHM to put in along with pulling out some perch? How many perch should I pull out of the pond? Should I add other fish? I would like to keep the perch although I would mind having a few more blue gill and maybe some bass. What I’m reading it sounds like it may be hard to keep good numbers of perch with those other fish. On the other hand do I have enough perch in the pond that it wouldn’t matter? I also think I’ll have to do an assessment this spring to really know what I have because of not having an arreator this winter but again I have no idea. I know there are a lot of questions but I would appreciate any feed back on any of these questions. Thanks

Welcome! On the FHM question, adding them to a pond with established predators is just adding expensive fish food. Adding FHM to a new pond allows them to reproduce so when other fish are added later, the new fish have a good start on the plentiful forage supply. Do you work for the big employer in Midland?
