xxxxxxxx sells both hand-painted BG and coppernose BG. Are you interested on one specie or both species?

Just Hand Paint Bluegill. I have Coppernose as needed. They may have contacted me. Need small number for photographs and to generate some small fry through controlled spawning for an experiment comparing them to Coppernose I have and Northern Bluegill.

I am photographing females I have but want to see if color pattern that is more pronounced in males plays a role in behavior of interest. The three types of Bluegill differ more than in just looks.

I suspect that the male coloration of the male xxxxxx plays a big role in the reproductive biology of the xxxxxxx Coloration is a big factor in breeding behavior in many fish, birds and other animals. Your practical research results will be very educational. Good idea to look into this topic!.

Since xxxxxxx. promotes the xxxxxxxx to grow as big as CNBG and larger than the northern BG I wonder why more fish farms don't grow the xxxxxxx variety of BG.

I think the black patches on flanks plays a role other than with reproduction. Females have it too although less developed.

Fish farmers up my way and further north will likely have same problem I have when it comes to winter survival. Even Coppernose from more southern locations have serious issues with cold.

If it were up to me, Hand Paint Bluegill would be cultured and marketed only in the drainage they are from. Then folks their would have their special fish.

I do not support that Coppernose outperform Northern Bluegill without some particulars considered.

Agree 100%

"Forget pounds and ounces, I'm figuring displacement!"

If we accept that: MBG(+)FGSF(=)HBG(F1)
And we surmise that: BG(>)HBG(F1) while GSF(<)HBG(F1)
Would it hold true that: HBG(F1)(+)AM500(x)q.d.(=)1.5lbGRWT?
PB answer: It depends.

Many things including color (visible cues) effect spawning behavior. One not normally thought of by most is the copper bar on CNBG. In the water while spawning it looks bright white and is very visible. See below.

Yes all the copper/cream/white fin/tail edges are very visible and are part of the equation. One that I note for consideration is the red on RES and PS. Red color under water is very dependent on light. So red on RES/PS and gills is very visible in real shallow water (spawning) but is not visible in deep water due to lack of light.

Some of the color variation may be a function of water clarity / transparency to particular colors. Tannic acids are seldom a major issue when NBG breed.
