i am planning on filling my 1 acre pond up this week. i have a couple of questions before i do about stocking. My plan is to stock 750 bluegill and 5pds of fat head minnows. i am wanting to stock the f1 bass but the only place i found that stocks the f1's only delievers them in june. i was wondering how much i would need to stock of minnows if i decided to go ahead and put the bass in at the end of june? i had another suggestion i liked it was to put the bass in a cage and feed them until the end of the summer. My only problem with that is i dont know how much to feed or what to even feed them. Also my pond doesnt have alot of water running in it so i would need to know if that would effect the fish in a cage. Also how deep would i need to let them stay? Thanks for any help in advance.

One word: PATIENCE

This is your best shot at establishing a good forage base. I would concentrate on that and when I felt that it was well established, with plenty of cover, spawing objects for the minnows, etc. Then I would start thinking about predators like F1 bass.

Bard,

Take it from someone who couldn't wait to put the bass in, WAIT TIL NEXT YEAR TO PUT IN YOUR BASS. We did the same thing 10 years ago and created a bass-crowded lake in about two years. It is difficult to correct that situation and we are still fighting it today. We have a few very large bass and many skinny bass. We have a fabulous bream lake, but poor bass fishing. If you want a great bream lake, then go ahead and put in bass this summer. If you want a quality bass lake, let the forage have a year to multiply and put in your bass next year and you will see unbelievable growth in your bass for several years.

Bill

Thanks everybody for the info

As of right now i am planning on stocking my bluegill, redears, and minnows next week. i also have a small pond probably 30X30X30. i am planning on stocking fatheads in it to have a food source for the bass later on.

I talked to American Sport Fish, they can send the f1's out in july but that is the latest. i am planning on taking everybody's advice and wait until next year unless my pond has alot of bream and fatheads in it at the end of july then i would be tempted to buy the f1's and keep putting the minnows in from the other pond.

What is the best type of structure for the minnows to spawn in. i read somewhere they liked flat surfaces but i was wondering what else. i am putting in a 30' cedar tree that i am cutting up to put in differant places around the pond. Hopefully that will be good cover for the bass and bream.

Thanks again everybody for your help.
