i know this has been asked before, but i can't find any info. how long after liming should it take for alkalinity to change?

I noticed an increase in a couple days.
1.8 acre pond with CNBG, RES, HSB, and LMB Trophy Hunter feeder.

Using ag lime , depending on amount added, you will get a small initial bump in a few days after application (don't test 15 mins after you apply - let it settle first). Then over a few months it will gradually rise reaching a top and then start to gradually decline. Cycle time can vary , mine was about 18-24 months. Results do depend on your water and soil status.

we just got 4 inches of rain which caused lots of water to go out the pipe. hopefully in a few days i can get an accurate reading. the 5 tons i put in definitely got rid of the stained look in my water. also the test kit wasnt showing anything at first, but i is gradually starting to show a tad bit of alkalinity now.

What really effects the activity of lime is the screen mesh size of the product. The smaller the mesh the finer it is and more active it is. The larger product will stay around and activate as the water PH chips away at it.
