how many times a year do res spawn a year? also, i thought i remember reading where they spawn deeper than bg. that isnt the case in my pond. the res are very shallow and the bg are out behind them in deeper water. same area though.

RES can spawn more than once a year but not as much as BG. There are plenty of references to 2 spawns a year but mostly one spawn. RES often spawn very shallow with the BG a little deeper. Have pics of RES spawning in 6 inches of water with BG just beyond at about 2 feet.

I have had fall spawns of RES that were stocked in the late fall of one year but not big enough to spawn in the next spring. As they matured and got old and big enough, they spawned late that next summer/fall. Some additional spawning info: RES spawning questions RES spawning late in year RES on shallow beds More info on RES: RES info and links

Scott, I have the RES in my pond and in the public lake near here spawn in shallower water than the BG.
I have seen them spawn 2 months in a row. But never 3. I don't know if it's the dominant females that develop eggs first and spawn first or if there is another reason.
Nate Herman and I shocked a 10 acre lake last fall. The LMB were stunted, but we didn't shock up a huge amount of them. We shocked up 98 RES and only 2 BG, so the owner will be removing a LOT of bass this Spring, and I'm stocking 10,000 4"+ BG to try and get the lake back into balance.

i am almost sure i saw them on the bed late last fall here in my pond, but it was in the opposite corner from where these now are spawning. i saw them late yesterday evening, they were in their full mating ritual. they were so black in color it was unreal. they looked like flounders swimming around on their sides bumping into each other.
today about midday they had calmed down, just a single fish per bed and the color had lightened up.
