I'm sure there's plants in my pond I haven't identified, but I know I have plenty of FA. I've also identified primrose.

As you know, I'm planning on Tilapia asap.

I was also contemplating American Pondweed and corkscrew eel grass.

Where would a fellow find plants like that in Texas? Is there like a nursery for ponds?

Do these plants cost a lot? I don't plan on a huge amount of anything.

Also I want to make sure that anything I put in doesn't get eat up by Tilapia.

Tp will eat your algae, shouldn't bother any other plants.
Don't know about plants in tx, someone down there will holler, I'm sure.

I hear ya Farmall,

I'm in a similar situation here in Mo, except no tilapia for me (yet). If I can not find a good source for aquatic plants, I plan to go to some ponds near by (with permission, of course) and try identifying their weeds to see if they should/could be transplanted. I know there are risks in transplanting stuff from other ponds, but I'll cross that bridge if I can't find that "good source". I do have a cattle hole/catch basin with some arrow head-looking water plants in it and no fish (it mostly dries)...I'll start there. Once my pond fills up I'm sure PB forum will be hit up for plant ID help and possibly how to quarantine plants until they are deemed free of hitchhikers. One thing at a time for me for now.

Could you order plants online and have them sent to you? It seems like aquatic plants would be easy to ship. Check this website.

I know most of these websites are for backyard Koi ponds, but with some more research I am sure a place that carries beneficial fishing pond plants could be found.

Farmall,

I have gotten my best prices at:

Aquariumplant.com
Kesters Wild Game
J&J Transplants

Shop around. Prices vary a BUNCH!

Here is a thread you might find useful that probably will answer a lot of your questions. If you have more, I suggest you just continue this old thread so everybody can get the benefit.

Good Luck,

Bill D.

WoW! For someone who has had his hands in the dirt for most of his life, I know nothing about pond plants. I've been studying water lillies here lately.

My question for you folks that grow them in ponds. I'm talking about dirt ponds.

1. Do you plant these straight in the ground or do you use a container and sink it to the bottom?

*******-Bill answered the question above for me in another thread.*******

2. I see they have different root systems. I can't remember all the names they used, but one of them was marliac and another one was ordorato. I could be wrong, but my best guess would be how the roots spread. Is that correct?

3. If grown in containers, do you separate yours when the roots fills up the container. That's what I saw on one of the videos.

4. How many blooms will one typically see if you order one plant? I know it depends on the variety, but if you could tell me your experience with your varieties.

5. Prices are all over the board from 8.00 to 100.00 and I'm trying to bend my mind around why there is such a difference.
