Checked my body grip and leg grip traps for my "other" beaver...no luck so far. I think I found the beaver den down a nearby creek in the wall of the bank downstream from my dam. Will move one of the body grip traps and cover the entry hole...force that rascal to go through it.

Tried to hand feed, but the fish wouldn't have it. The water was 56 degrees.

Checked the traps......still no beaver. Hand fed some pellets today. The fish hit it pretty aggressively. The water was 55 degrees.

Hey Charlie,

I might have missed it. Why do you suspect you still have a beaver? Active dam building on the creek?

Measured the water depth and checked on the grass on the dam.

We've made tremendous progress over the last few months. Got the pond built/expanded and I now have 3' of water as of yesterday!! I ordered my forage fish and 2 TX Hunter feeders. Praying for more rain!!

In early Dec we planted cereal rye and unhulled bermuda seed. The objective was for the rye to come up early and the Bermuda once it warms up. We've had crazy weather with temps down to the low 20's not long after the rye came up and then temps in the upper 80's last week. I've got grass growing but not as thick as I expected.

Seeded the dam on the new pond with annual rye. Rolled it in with a lawn roller. We are predicted to get a little rain tomorrow. It's as dry as I have EVER seen it for this time of year. We haven't had a good rain in over seven months...only little ones now and then.

Hand fed some sinking pellets for the CC. Yesterday, stocked about 45-47 six to eight inch CC into the new pond.

Bill,
Other than the familiar grass clippings in the water and mashed down area at the waters edge, the beaver surfaced about 4' from me at the waters' edge earlier this year.

Went up to he farm today to check on the house, fix a flat on my tractor, and cut a driveway for the 40' conex container coming in this week. I made a pass around the pond to check the beaver traps.....no luck. I can watch at a distance and the ponds surface is perfectly calm. It's amazing how the fish will start breaking the waters' surface when the tractor drives up. Funny, how that is.

I took just a small amount of feed out just to see if there were any takers. Water too cold yet to really feed much, but just wanted to see if there was any activity. Did not really expect any.

For the most part there was not. But two areas around the pond had a number of nice, big BG give a fair amount of activity after the feed.

I think once it warms up in the next few days after this cold spell passes it will be "feed on" again for 2017.

Big day. Got my dock installed by the intrepid Overton team! Quite an undertaking, my wife and I got to watch. Thanks, guys.

Walt Overton noted that, unlike last year, the water has a greenish tinge. pH 6.5, hardness & alkalinity in the 40s, all decent though not great. Last year pH consistently around 5.5.

Anyway, should be able to fertilize in a couple of weeks of warm weather. I hope we can place some artificial & natural habitat in the lake by that time, but it depends on how many helpers I can recruit.

Pleasantly surprised to discover that my forage pond is about 80 percent full. Unlike the main BOW, it has no constant source of water, just the rain. Never been limed, so pH is only 6.0. Walt suggested I put some lime in it before stocking CNBG. Right now it is a frog & tadpole haven.

Next step: Pond King Pro boat. The stability (I have very active grandkids) was a big selling point, as is the fact it can be left out in the weather without harm. Hope they deliver soon!

PS I'm feeding two seconds a day, but haven't seen any takers yet. Hopefully that will change soon with warmer weather.

My fish are just starting to eat again after the flood. I had my brother sink the habitat and pull out some of the tree limbs that washed into the pond. The FA has vanished from the surface, but I know it will probably return with a vengeance.

This past few days I have been adding brush piles along the shorelines. My pond has zero vegetation and so I needed some thick cover along the shoreline, places where the newborn fish might hide to survive. I have been using 10 to 15' cedar trees, 7' bamboo tied in bundles and 7' willows tied in bundles. 10 brush pies so far with a few more to add this week. Plans are to mix and match them and build a thick places for them to hide for better lmb, cnbg and res recruitment this spring.

Yesterday evening I just sat and took in all the little sounds. Frogs, birds, fish popping the surface. Etc.

There is a family that lives 1/4 mile away and I could hear kids laughing and playing. I fell asleep in my adirondack chair only to have my wife tap me on the shoulder to tell me supper was ready.

Pretty peaceful.

That paints a pretty picture farmallsc! I just noticed the spring peeper frogs at my pond the other day even though there is only a foot or two of water in the pond, the frogs are showing up. Pretty peaceful indeed.

Good for you, Tracy! I'm in the same boat (no pun intended) with my pond, zero submerged vegetation, so will try brushpiles & artificial structure.

Impressed that you are mixing cedars, bamboo and willows. My stuff will mostly be sweet gum with brush.

By the way, do you intend to use GPS to locate your brushpiles, or perhaps mark it some other way?

Really looking forward to fertilizing enough to get a bloom. Never came close to happening last year, too acidic. Will also try putting some lime in the main feeder creek.

Anthropic, I used duck decoys at every piece of structure I submerged. Works great ,don't look bad, and has brought a few live ducks in. Just a thought. Bought a big bag of them at a garage sale for less than $2 each.

Hay there Frank, to explain about the brush piles, they are along the shoreline where they can be seen so no need to mark them. This is to give cover for the fingerlings, giving them a better chance at survival as they cruise the shoreline. Now as far as other cover, its pretty much been added where there is some type of structure like underwater points, ledges and or where two different depths meet. And some more is set on a couple of flats. Ha ha, my son says I have to much cover, but if you go with 20 to 30 percent cover, it means something like an acre of cover in a 3 acre pond. that is a lot of cover if you think about it. Have some fun with you new ride and place some cover around to where it might concentrate some fish for easy fishing. smile

"What did you do at your pond today?"

I picked up two more winter killed RES yesterday, it has been a long month since ice out. I picked up one more dead RES this morning frown

I did have a snipe visit the pond shoreline yesterday and chased a great blue heron off this morning.

put 7 lbs of FHM in the pond today and hand sorted them all. only other thing I found in there a was a rosy red and it went in the pond. impressed with Shelby fish farm 100% no unwanted fish in the bunch. now to wait 2-3 weeks to get the rest of the fish and GSH.
also put 4 pallets in for FHM spawning structure and some homemade floating structures with pieces of spouting.

After further investigation, I found the battery on my TH dock feeder was dead (I thought it would last more than 2 years being solar charged). That explains a few things. I hand fed yesterday and today...the fish were voracious. Pulled the battery for exchange. Water temperature was 66 degrees. It's spring time in SE Texas.

I sat in the glider most of the day visiting with my nephew. I fed several times today. I always try to keep the morning and evening meals at the same time, but the rest of the feeding is done at various times throughout the day. Handful here and there. They always seem hungry.
