Does anyone know about heavy equipment? I have three small ponds and have always wanted to have something over an acre. My dad finaly got senile enough to buy a 50 something D6 Cat. I'm about half way through with enlarging one of my ponds to about two acres and have a broken seal (that's what I'm told). Grease is leaking out in front of the big spring and causing the track to loosen. I've taken the bolts out in front of the spring and behind the spring but it doesn't come out. Is it compressed? Do I have to take off the grease resevoir by taking everything off up to the wheel? These are some rusty bolts. Am I making sense. I want ot finish before the spring rains and this is driving me crazy.

Brian: the guys at this website are always happy to answer my questions about old tractors. I'm sure they can help you out. Be careful, if it's a compressed spring, it can cause serious damage/pain or even death if improperly removed...

Brian, no need to take the spring out to fix the problem. check the fitting on top of the spring, one is a zerk the other is a relief. Grease will leak out of them if not tight. Put the bolts back in the spring hold down.Grease will leak inside of the spring if the seal are out of the hydro adjuster, if that is the case the seal are out of the hydro adjuster. Inside of the spring on the idler side (front) is a chrome cylinder, in the cylinder are the seals that are leaking. Take a block of wood put in the spocket, loosen the relif on the top of the spring, back the tractor up, force the cylinder back into the spring all the way. The shaft that bolts to the cylinder is connected ot the front idler, unbolt the shaft at the cylinder pull the idler forward, inside of the cylinder are the seals and piston. Pull the piston out of the cylinder, the new seal installed lip forward. I think you have a 8u or 9u D6, look on the back left corner of the dozer for the serial number you will need that when you order . TROLL

BRIAN, on top of the spring there is a grease zerk, near the zerk is a relief valve on some models, when you want to release the grease pressure loosen the relief,if the one you have does not have one it is built into the the grease zerk. Take the zerk out look at the threads if there is a cut in the threads it is built in. Where is the grease leaking from, tighten the zerk pump full of grease put a block in the track back up, where is the leak in the spring our by the zerk, troll

It doesn't have a relief--just a zerk. We took it out and put a block in. No grease leaked out of the zerk hole but a little leaked out in the spring. Other than that it just compressed the spring. There is just an inch or less on the shaft before it gets larger and can't go into the cylinder. Is that enough? It looks like it needs to be shorter before it would come out. Is it one long shaft that goes from the idle through the cylinder and inside the two springs or is it two?

Looking at the posts, maybe the problem is what we are calling the cylinder and shaft. There is a spring with a smaller spring inside it and a shaft inside it. You cant really see inside the springs. In front of the spring is what I call the cylinder with the zerk in it then you have a shaft that goes into another cylinder (that just holds it to the frame) and then to the idler.
