Several months ago I mentioned I was building swing out bar stools for our new kitchen, in line with our industrial rustic design style. Someone, I don't recall who, wanted to see some photos. Here's where we're at, waiting on cabinets for each end as well as countertops. looks crooked from this angle, but it really isn't. Light over the future kitchen sink. An old hay pulley, and some Coleman lantern tops, or ventilators, as Coleman calls em'. Getting closer, one day at a time.

That is sweet Tony! I'm afraid to show it to my wife though. I'm afraid that design would work absolutely perfect out at my fish cleaning station on the dock. After wife got tired standing after the first 15 fish she cleaned I pulled an old bar stool out of the tractor shed. You know, one of those things too good to throw away but not good enough for the house anymore so it gathers dust and bird poop for ten years THEN you throw it away. Well it worked great for her on the dock. But your design would be the absolute cats meow! Where did you get the ACME screw and nut? Doesn't possibly have an elevator usage does it? Edit: Looked again. Those are just regular coarse threads, not ACME. My mistake!

Tony, I was the one who asked for the pictures and I thank you very much for taking the time to post them. I was trying to understand in your picture above what keeps the chair out away from the counter top? Does the person have to be careful so the chair doesn't swing in and out? Is there a lock position in the out position so it doesn't swing all the way past 180 degrees?
very very cool!

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Snrub, you are correct. It's a standard, 1" coarse thread, 1-8 I believe. My usual source, McMaster-Carr, has the acme in stock. I actually had it in the cart, until I saw the price for the coupling nuts....no way.
Canyon, the stools are free to swing in and out, no locking mechanism. My family has been all over them, there is no tendency to kick out or fling you off.

Tony, very cool! My wife would absolutely love one of those with casters for a roll away picnic table for the porch.
Like snrub, I'd be afraid to show this to my wife.

I spy with my little eye some LED filament bulbs?
This is the future of LED light bulbs.
If my kids had that they would spin the chairs up to far. I would peen the threads on the bottom in one spot.

Did you make the braces that the screws set on, or did you repurpose something? Do the stools swing freely with weight or do they bind at all??
Did you use a MIG on that?
Very sharp design! Thanks for sharing! Some thought went into that!

Very sharp design! Thanks for sharing! Some thought went into that! I did fabricate the arms, they're cut from 3/8" plate. I purchased the wooden seats, the threaded rod, and those coupling nuts. Everything else was fabricated, or sourced from stuff I already had. The stools swing easily, even when seated upon, but I took extra time to machine clearances pretty tight...no slop to let the arms drop and bind. The legs run through the floor, and tie into the 2 x 10 floor joists. I used the mig to tack everything, but the stick to make it permanent. I like the look of the table in the link Zep posted, and the price isn't that bad either. If you don't need a counter height unit, it looks like it might be okay. I always encourage anyone considering building it themselves, however. Not everyone is in a position to do so, but if you can, you should try it. There's a great deal more satisfaction gained from building a one-off piece yourself, than there is from signing a check and letting someone else do it.

I agree. I'm a welding instructor at our local community college and a diesel mechanic. I was a agriculture teacher (FFA)teacher for 9 years prior to that. Long story short, LOTS and LOTS of projects and "necessity" built tools...lol. Some good...some not so good. There is SO much more satisfaction and alot to be learned. Not to mention YOU are the quality control. Not someone with a number in a warehouse that doesn't know you.
There is something about helping someone with a project and seeing their pride also!
Great job on the table!

I agree sprkplug....doing projects yourself can be quite rewarding..and that can be done in various ways....the only reason I posted the link is because I think yours looks sooo good and if someone can't build it themselves they have options. My brother had a unique talent in that he rarely ever built anything himself, but he would come up with tons of "crazy good" designs for the log company or his carpenter friend to build. It was like the builders didn't have his unique talents of design and he didn't really have the time/talent to actually produce what he designed....but together they created many things of beauty.

I'm with you Zep. I've seen photos you've posted here, and they are amazing...whether it was the idea, the implementation, or both, the results speak for themselves. That's what I'm trying to say, I wish more folks would become involved, and push their own limits. Design or fabrication.
This is the age of Amazon, unfortunately. Easier to order it online. And I think that's too bad, as those folks may never discover what they can do, if they would just try.
That's one more thing I like about this forum. The creativity that's regularly displayed.

Zep and sprkplug;
You guys should teach! We need people with viewpoints like yours! It will make you sick to see how many of todays youth are. Just like you said sprkplug, its the "amazon" generation.
Whether we are talking about building something or being creative "think on your own", the newer generations for the most part do not have it. They can work your phone at the age of 4 though.
Don't even get me on work ethic.
I love the creativity that you see here also. You can tell its here...not only that, nearly every single thing you read about someone doing here is work...outside...manual labor.
I know society has pushed us this way...but it takes people...and only people to change it. Adults have to step up and lead, show, help create, spend time with young people while you have a chance.
Zep people like your brother are in short supply in our youth. They can take a test and pass it. But design things like your brother...they are blown away. Its really sad.
Sorry for rambling.
