On Mothers day, wife and I attended a sale or show where a plant farm sells only native plants from our area. I was surprised to learn of this plant farm. They offered several native tree species including the Bald Cypress tree. Now I am thinking of adding them around the pond. But first thought I would bounce this off others here. My pond has a large area of a dam that is U shaped and surrounds 3 sides of the pond. Any problems using a Bald Cypress tree along the dam area? Also looking at some Swamp Chesnutt trees for planting in a low area around the pond, away from the dam.
Thanks
Tracy

I would be leery of planting any trees on the dam.

Bald Cypress are beautiful trees and we have several around our property. I'm no expert but I don't see any issue with them over any other ornamental tree. The reference about the dam seems to be the issue here. Why would you want them along the dam rather than planting them any other place around lake ? Bottom line, don't plant any trees where the roots can impact the dam.

I'd plant the Bald Cypress in the shallows opposite the dam. As long as the leaves are above water, a 6' seedling can be planted in 4' of water and will develop the classic "knees" to fish around...

I would not plant trees on or near a dam.
I like Bald Cypress a lot and love them in the swamp. Even planted a few around a pond. However you need to know that they will spread and take over the banks over time. They drop balls (nuts) into the water which float to the bank and sprout.
Swamp Chesnutt is a great idea.

If trees die, the roots rot leaving a void where roots once were and can cause dam to start leaking, or worse failure.

Not sure if it is correct but the link above calls them both the same. I am about 30 minutes from London Ontario. I would realy like some diversity in trees here but do want mostly evergreens and want to stay away of leaf trees. Cheers Don.

Tracy, I can say that the button bush have done extremely well around (and even in) my pond. Planted small sticks in muddy shoreline just 5 weeks ago, now they are leafing out and doing great.
I like cypress, too, and hope to plant some. Not familiar with swamp chestnut.

I did not realize that buttonbush would readily root from cuttings. Thanks for the info.

Just was making sure you were using the term evergreen to mean conifer (like I sometimes do).
