Todd,
What is in the pond for them to eat?

How long before they are big enough to send on their way to their new homes?

Todd:

I just got off the phone with a guy down there who was wondering if you still have any Legacy fingerlings for this Spring, or if they all were sold?

If you answer here, he will see it.

Those fish look great!!! I wish we could have something like that up here.

We feed our breeder bass coppernose bluegill, thread fin shad, and tilapia. Last summer I stocked their 1 acre pond with 500lbs of 2-3inch tilapia!!

Yes we just recently put our bass fry in grow-out ponds, and they will be ready to sell by end of May, through June-July

Right now looks like a lot more numbers than I can move. I hope I will get some bulk buyers, and price is negotiable depending on size and numbers of fish requested.

So are they called a Florida hybrid after that? What are Todds fish called Florida hybrids? Just trying to learn. I am stocking my bass in the next 60 days.

not sure one that one, Florida hybrid could be either F1 or several generations down I suppose. I think most breeders sell the F1 though.

F1's are the first generation hybrid... Could be a LMB, BG, whatever. When two F1's reproduce, their offspring are F2's. When two F2's reproduce, their offspring are F3's, etc.

Normally the 1st generation, or F1's, reap the greatest benefit from the hybridization process.

"Forget pounds and ounces, I'm figuring displacement!"

If we accept that: MBG(+)FGSF(=)HBG(F1)
And we surmise that: BG(>)HBG(F1) while GSF(<)HBG(F1)
Would it hold true that: HBG(F1)(+)AM500(x)q.d.(=)1.5lbGRWT?
PB answer: It depends.

What's it called when a F2 X F1? F3 as well since it represents the third cross from pure strain? I would think that could easily happen after a few years in a pond that was initially stocked with only F1.

As the LSLB are pure Florida, will their offspring always be considered F0?

A mutt?

The wonderful world of hybrid fish. Reciprocal crosses, backcrosses, outbreeding depression...not sure how much of that really applies when the parental fish are both the same species, but different strains.

If they are pure Florida strain with no northern strain genetics they will always be that way unless some one puts a fish in the pond with northern strain DNA.

The advantage of pure F0 genetics is that you don't get outbreeding problems. The disadvantage is that you might get inbreeding.

There is little to no proof that outbreeding depression applies to Fla/North crosses whether they are F-1 , 2 or FXs (all referenced as integrades) in there natural integrade zone .

Status of Subspecies as of 2011 subject to change:
Florida Largemouth Bass and the Northern Largemouth Bass were once considered to be subspecies. Many state fisheries agencies still consider them to be subspecies and treat them as such, often stocking “Florida strain largemouth” on top of the native Largemouth Bass stocks. Although the American Fisheries Society (AFS) also officially still recognizes them as subspecies, biologists specializing in the field are calling for them to be separated into two distinct species: Florida Bass and Largemouth Bass. This is based off genetic studies that suggest that the genetic variation between Florida Bass and Largemouth Bass . A natural intergrade zone occurs where the two species’ ranges meet and overlap in the deep southeast. Artificial intergrade zones exist where state agencies have stocked Florida Bass over Largemouth Bass for decades.
