I know a few times it has been brought up that HSB are not sterile but functionally sterile. I ran across this a proof that they are not sterile and can back cross too.

Just thought is was interesting so I shared it incase some other fish minded person might too.

Hatchery and Growout Performance of Sunshine Bass and Backcross Hybrid Striped Bass in Recirculating Aquaculture Systems

ABSTRACT
Previous research has suggested that backcross hybrid striped bass (BX: sunshine bass female x striped bass male) perform as well as F1 hybrid striped bass (sunshine bass: white bass female x striped bass male) for many economically important traits. We conducted trials to compare rearing and growth traits of selected backcross hybrid striped bass with hybrid striped bass (HSB). We spawned and reared larval BX fry in two hatchery cycles, measured fry growth and performance, and compared them to past performance of HSB fry. We conducted a grow-out trial of commercially-available hybrid striped bass versus backcross hybrid striped bass in replicated tanks to phase II fingerling size (approximately 100g). Compared to HSB, in the hatchery phase, backcross hybrid striped bass exhibited lower fertilization rate, comparable swimbladder inflation rate, shorter time-to-weaning, lower survival, comparable growth, and comparable condition factor. After 60 days, HSB exhibited significantly better growth, survival, and feed conversion efficiency than BX. However, BX may have better potential market acceptance by virtue of having a lower condition factor, appearing longer and less deep-bodied than HSB.

BUILDING A SUPERIOR HYBRID STRIPED BASS: DNA MARKER-ASSISTED INTROGRESSION

Non Technical Summary
A major impediment to survival and expansion of the U.S. hybrid striped bass (HSB) farming industry is the reliance of producers on wild broodstock for spawning. Production of an essentially wild cultivar is inefficient, resulting in high costs that preclude penetration of the product into traditional retail markets and that render the HSB industry vulnerable to aggressive competition from imported farmed and wild seafood products. During the tenure of this research, we will create the improved HSB stock needed for industry expansion and establish the molecular tools and genetic knowledge necessary for continued selective improvement of the new cultivar over the next decade We will begin developing the new HSB cultivar by coupling established procedures for introgressive hybridization with marker-assisted selection based on our recently established suite of > 400 microsatellite DNA marker loci and our existing procedures for high through-put genotyping of fish at about half of these loci. In the present project, we aim to utilize DNA marker-assisted introgression (MAI) to establish the founder HSB stock for generating the new cultivar. This founder stock will consist of F3-generation BC hybrids that are genetically >94% striped bass based on average proportions of striped bass and white bass alleles. With the founder stock and these advanced molecular tools in hand, we should be able to make continued rapid progress in establishing of a true breeding HSB cultivar with superior performance characteristics.

Correct, there is one forum member that has them spawning in his pond. I am not sure if they are successfully spawning, or just going thru the motions.

I did not know this. Interesting

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Dave, I'm bad with names, but it was the guy that invented Stubby Steve's. His pond.

Here guys is the link with video for HSB spawning. Stacy posted for Steve. Stacy works for Stubby Steve's. His name is Stephen Munsey and they have supported our group in many ways.

This is from a previous Cutting Edge article on Richmond Mill and a PB fishing group.

The group was graciously hosted by The King Fisher Society the manager of Richmond Mill Lake by its Fisheries Scientist Dave Behuler and its owner the Jim Morgan Family. Part of the science aspect (a test on catching feed trained fish) was made possible by generous support from Stubby Steve’s who provided its product for testing (Steve even got us some prototype product and hats and drove them down to Richmond Mill) . TTI/Blakemore/Roadrunner owner T. J. Stallings heard about the event from Stacy with Stubby Steve’s and joined the effort by providing a large quantity of its hooks and hats for the event. Pond Boss owner Bob Lusk as usual went the extra miles and rearranged his schedule to fly in and be with us. These sponsors go to great lengths to support the science of fish and fishing by helping us (and you) so please support them and their products.
