I believe I've read on here that for every 10 pounds of live baitfish eaten by a predator fish they gain one pound. Is this correct? Trying to calculate potential weight gain put on my catfish next year via feed and harvesting carp and using as feed source.

Rainman just posted on another thread recently about how different species convert at different rates so IMO the answer to your question is it depends. From what I've read and my own experience, CC convert at around 2 pounds of a grain based pellets to 1 pound weight. As CC don't need a high protein diet, I would think they need a lot less than 10 lbs of natural forage to gain a pound.

Look at the % of water that is in natural forage. That might give you some idea of natural forage vs. pellets vs. pounds.........

I don't know the answer.

I'm convinced that there is certainly some "filler" in pellets that is undigestable. If not, there wouldn't different %'s on the feed. And, there are other additives that may be as, or more, important than the protein.

Live prey has a lot of stuff that passes through a gut without converting to protein. I just don't know the %.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

I know the cheap catfish feed that runs around $10-$15 a bag has a few pounds of sand that has been left behind in my aquariums before...
