I have some large holes in my dam that look like they were made by a muskrat. My question is should I just fill the holes in with dirt or should I do something more?

James, I didn't know we had muskrats in our area.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Whatever made the holes, I think 2 things are imperative:

1) Ensure the excavators have been removed (non-returnably).

2) Fill the entirety of the hole, if possible.

I had a burrow on my dam that I believe was made by a turtle (speculation). I dug the entire length of it out with a shovel and repacked it with a spud bar. I was happy to see that whatever had dug it did not penetrate the packed clay core, it only dug in the softer topsoil located on top.

Could be beavers trying to get a foothold. My neighbor found the same and a few days later they had dug further and were trying to use the dam as a lodge. he concreted the holes and they simply dug around them. He ended up using fox urine aroung the area - no more beavers.
