Anyone here ever catch a GC on a rod and reel? Yesterday evening while using a 1/4 ounce lipless crankbait on an ultra light rig, I hooked into something that took off screaming straight away from me burning up the drag. After a "holy crap" moment, I thought it was going to either spool me or get to some cover and break me off, so I put my hand on the spool to help slow it down. All of the sudden what I think was a GC came jumping out of the water doing it's best Tarpon impersonation. It looked like it would weigh between 10 or 15 pounds. After the third jump and the drag still singing, it cut me off on something and the line went slack. I could not help but be amazed at what had just happened and won't soon forget it. So, anyone else ever catch a GC and have it jump like that?

GC are a blast - especially on a fly rod! 14.5 lb is my best to date... They will break you off in a heatbeat unless you have a good drag. This is one of the smaller ones from a few weeks ago...

Yep. They are nuclear-powered, acrobatic, runaway freight trains.
"Forget pounds and ounces, I'm figuring displacement!"
If we accept that: MBG(+)FGSF(=)HBG(F1) And we surmise that: BG(>)HBG(F1) while GSF(<)HBG(F1) Would it hold true that: HBG(F1)(+)AM500(x)q.d.(=)1.5lbGRWT? PB answer: It depends.

About like roping a freight train.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Caught one on 6 pound test, jig and nightcrawler, last week. Unexpected, but appreciated fight.

Thanks for the reply's gentlemen, especially the pictures. I caught one in my pond 2 years ago. It was in open water with heavier tackle. While it put up a heck of a fight, it didn't jump out of the water like this one did. Acted more like a big catfish. George, I'll bet they are big fun with fly gear. Do any of you guys go fishing specifically targeting GC?

Do any of you guys go fishing specifically targeting GC? I have targeted GC a few times but rarely successful - conditions have to be just right for me. I love to sight fish for them with fly tackle but water conditions and presentation has to be delicate and accurate - they are spooky critters. Most are caught on “chunk” flies - a chunk of this or a chunk of that that looks like chum (formerly called “pellet flies”)… Todd's GC on popper bug:
