I stocked about 30 lake chubsuckers in my pond last spring. I haven't seen them since. I was searching online for real life videos or pictures of them rather than still shots or artist impressions of what they look like. Does someone have pictures of their lake chubsuckers as they appear as they are freshly netted out of the pond or in a minnow trap or bucket?

Also I found this on youtube but is this a chubsucker?

It is not a common carp because the dorsal fin is way too short. The view of it was way too brief. At first glance, it does look like a chubsucker to me. Not positive if it is a lake or creek chubsucker.

Thanks Bill,

The aquarium pictures of lake chubsuckers on youtube have a very prominent black horizontal stripe. This one's gold coloring is throwing me. But looking at more pictures online it appears the black stripe goes away.

See this picture and info,

Another Lake Chubsucker

or this with adult and juvenile side by side:

Minnesota LCS

it looks very similar to the video above if you hit pause right at 19 or 20sec mark in the youtube video above.

Can't wait till mine get that big smile

Looks like a lake chubsucker to me. I have them by the oodles in my pond. I apparently lost a bunch during the spawn as they come shallow them and they went over the over flow during a heavy rain. I found some of the large ones trying to migrate back up the feeder stream they had flooded into.

Pretty stoked at the pond tonight! As I emptied my trap right at dark tonight I see this in the trap. I'm thinking it is too cigar shaped for a drab goldfish and doesn't have the right lateral line for a shiner. The mouth is kind of 'carp like' but it looks different. Maybe this is one of the original 25-30 LCS that I stocked and never saw from again?

CJBS has posted in the past that he sees the LCS juveniles fish with prominent dark bands down the side in the shallows but I never saw adult or juvenile since stocking. I thought maybe they never made the winter but now it appears that at least one made it!

The picture in this link seems to match pretty well!

Adult and Juvenile LCS

This, from my pond! Maybe there will be a spawn and some YOY finally smile (sorry about the designer gloves, I'm removing unwanted goldfish and they are nasty to touch!)

Interesting. Looks like the Golden Redhorse Suckers I catch in a river near me.

I noticed the scales have a compressed diamond shape (that stood out to me when I first saw it)

Some of these look similar (not so much the color but the scales) Maybe as this one becomes an adult the darker blotches start coming in?

LCS from the web

Tennessee Lake Chubsucker

Lots more to browse here:

yahoo search for LCS

Bill, I have no other BOW that can transfer into my pond. However, I did get a big bag of FHM and GSH from a wholesale bait outfit and a sucker could have gotten in the big bag of stocker minnows.

I was hoping that it was more likely that the LCS that I DID put in somehow made it smile But I agree many of the pictures online show a wider midsection and at least some dark coloration in the adults.

Hey CC,

Not saying you have the ID wrong. Just an observation that the two species appear similar. Having LCS in your pond is awesome!

A little know fact about them: they are quite prolific. In fact there's a sucker born every minute!

I'm no longer qualified to say. Had to be able to identify 150 fish in college but that was back in the 70's!

If Bill Cody says it is I would go with Bill.

I'm not a fish ID expert either, but it sure looks like the juvenile LCS I've got.

it looks like a chub sucker to me. Not sure which type exactly but if you planted LCS , good chance that's what type it is.

I planted 4 in my forage pond (that's all I could source) and I saw one the other day when I fed and it looked like that.

It is a lake chubsucker in canyoncreek's pond. Notice that the mouth of a golden redhorse and other redhorse is more ventral than that for a chubsucker. The redhorse has a noticeably blunt snout with the mouth underneath.

I rather doubt that you will have any reproduction from your LCS because I think the goldfish will eat all the unguarded LCS eggs. LCS lay eggs early in the season when natural foods are usually in short supply thus any fish eggs are prime fish food items. You also may not have optimum spawning habitat to get good spawns & hatches of LCS. I think FA is important for their spawn egg hatch habitat. Cooper (1935) indicated that eggs were scattered over aquatic vegetation including moss, filamentous algae, and grass stubble. Carr (1942) reported an association between lake chubsuckers and largemouth bass nests and in which lake chubsuckers laid their eggs in active largemouth bass nests and the developing eggs would be protected from predators by largemouth bass.

Turbid water will also be a detriment to egg hatch since LCS thrive in clear water. Any LCS fry that manage to hatch will likely get consumed by your existing fish.

OK....
Priority 1 is removing goldfish and operation 'goldfish-no-more' is underway in earnest. 40+ out in 2 days smile That will clear up water which will help the LCS and protect their eggs.

Turbidity - soilfloc so far has given excellent visibility, of course it is also ice out time which usually gives clear water too.

No FA anywhere. that is good and bad. (Bad for the smaller members of the food chain and the fish eggs) Tilapia did great last year. I'm going to have to see what happens with vegetation and FA this year and decide whether to do tilapia or not again. The tilapia I imagine also scavenge on fish eggs too but they usually don't get stocked till mid May or even early June here in MI.

Crays are destroying the vegetation. But with very clear water this year I'm interested to see if the vegetation makes a come back. I'm thinking with excellent sun penetration we might see some vegetation back again which would be good for the scuds, ghost shrimp and maybe the fish eggs smile

Tilapia are basically only eating fish eggs if the eggs are attached to the algae and plants they are eating.

Hey come on now. You're just mad 'cause I hijacked your thread! grin

Have you tried to get a taxonomic identification guide that uses a detailed binary key to key it out? I have one around here somewhere. I could look up LCS and see what the key differences are from the other suckers.

Where is Rainman when you need him? I was told tilapia when young eat mostly anything (bugs, algae, critters, detritus, eggs,) and when older start with FA but then are happy to move on to eggs, and the list broadens as ewest suggested in his post...
