I have a pond that was built in 1973 and received no maintenance for 30 years.I have been in the process of removing the muck from the bottom of the pond.I have been using what I am calling a hydro dozer it is an intake manifold for a trash pump.I reduced my 3" trash pump down to 2" for easier handling. I will try to load pictures of it. I pump the muck and water to another pond then let it settle and create a bloom then drain back to another pond.looks like I have to study how to load pictures.

First, I think a lot of forum members would be very interested in what you are doing. I know I certainly would be. I've tried various similar methods with near zero positive results. I presently use my trash pump to just irrigate my garden and wildlife food plots. I have to clean out pond sludge about every hour from my sprinklers -- but it is extremely minute compared to what I'd like to pump into a holding pond.

Just a few years ago it was a lot easier to post photos. Things keep "improving" on the photo hosting sites. We have a link about posting photos, but it is somewhat out of date. I wish we had a better method, but that becomes a serious hosting and cost issue for a very small site like ours.

Basically, you need to upload your photos to a photo hosting site like like Photobucket, Google+, or any number of others. Once uploaded, you should be able to display the photo on your computer.

In Windows, if you click on your right mouse key anywhere on the photo, it will ask you what you want to do with the image. Depending on the site, you should get several options, ranging from "open in a new window", "open in a new tab", or "Copy the Image URL." The main thing is to get the URL address of the image.

You should be able to post that into your post.

If nothing seems to work, contact one of the moderators, like me, and we will try to make it pretty and visible to all.

Ken

I guess we double posted. Here is your photo in the thread.

Now we just need a lot more info about how your are making it work.

Ken

my pump will pump 1" solids so I drilled .90"holes every six inches and built a frame out of unistrut and six inch backing material attached a harness and rope to it. Ran 2" pvc from pump out to middle of pond attached a float to it hooked a 20'intake hose to it and hooked it up to manifold. I then attached it to a cleat on back of my boat and place it in far side of pond.start pump and it sucks up muck and water,it works it's way down into the muck then I pull it 6" then let go some more.

OK cb100, you have my curiosity here. You are doing exactly what I have wanted to do.I see the pic cat put up for you but it is not clear or large enough for me to see the details. The pic appears to show a PVC pipe with hoes on top of another PVC pipe tied together with metal bars of some sort.Right? 20 ft. length I understand, the holes I understand .90 to prevent the pump sucking anything larger than the pump can handle and plug.

What I do not understand is how and why the unit works in way down into the muck. Why does it work down into the mud? Just asking. I am not saying it does not do that, I guess I am asking.

I am sure you know it is doing some good due to the settlement pond filling with mud, Right? Do you have any Idea how much time you spend running the pump and pulling the pipe across the pond and the number of pounds or tons of mud you pull from your pond? Even a rough Idea would be great to know.

The pic shows it standing on the back of the manifold to show the holes for intake, the frame lays down with holes down, what looks like a pipe on the bottom is a piece of 6"backing metal that pulls the muck around the pipe to get sucked up. Last year I pumped about 90yards out let it dry and loaded into dump truck and placed it meadow, spread it out and planted food plot on it.

I don't remember how much my pump moves but if the muck is soft it would pump about 40 percent muck to water. I pump to another pond and the muck settle out then let drain back to pond.it is not a super fast method but it allows me to remove material down to 30' deep and 100' from bank without draining pond.

I don't have pictures, but I created a 3' wide metal wedge using 1/4" plate steel and 3/4" expanded metal as a sizing screen. I'd drag the wedge through silt using my barge and lines tied on each side of the front of the wedge. The back of the wedge was a collector with the 3" water intake attached, which sucked out eroded sediment, dumping it on the backside of a pond. removed a LOT of material in short order, but it was freshly placed from uncovered, eroded pond sides.

I left it at the client's place since he'd paid for me to build it.

Rex,

That too sounds pretty interesting. I have a Chinese-made 2-inch semi-trash pump from TSC (Red Lion brand) that has served me very well over 3-4 seasons. It is used almost exclusively for irrigating my garden and wildlife feed plots from my ponds.

I'd be interested in knowing more about the intake nozzle you made.

I've tried to find the pump specs, but couldn't find much. I know it will easily pass at least 1/4-inch soft crap.

I've tried to use the pump for pulling leaves from the pond edges, but that didn't work. Everything got jammed.

But, I'd sure like spray my garden and wildlife food plots with bottom muck -- that I also want to reduce.

I've got welding equipment and plenty of scrap materials to make a vacuum head. Any suggestions would be appreciated based on what you built.

Regards,
Ken

This is the hydrodozer thread that was recently referenced.

Can cb100 post more pictures or try his explanation again?

And Rainman, if you are around can you explain this wedge you built? is it like a wedge you use to split a log and the widest part of the wedge is oriented up and down? how does the dirt go into the intake, or is the widest part of the wedge horizontal left and right?

Sorry I don't think I have any more pics. But that device lays in the pond the flex hose goes onto two inch pvc for the pump intake. I attached a rope to the harness on the front of it and start the pump then I pull it a little at a time and let it suck up the muck. Once I pull it across the width of the pond I usually let it set for a day and the top layer of muck softens up. I started out pulling it up to the back of my boat and moving it back to the other side of the pond.and then repeated the process. But I later set up a small barrel to another rope so that when I pulled it it would raise the device up and I could pull it back across the pond for the next dredge run
