Wow! I didn't know HSB could get that big. I thought only striped bass could.

This large HSB is the "Sunshine" cross....only State Hatceries produce them as far as I know.....They get larger than the Rainbow cross we stock in private ponds/lakes. The Rainbow has FAR less mortality and cross breeding issues than the reciprocal Sunshine cross. Here is a link to Overton's info on the "Gazener" HSB.. http://www.overtonfisheries.com/Genetics/GlazenerHybridStripedBass/tabid/394/Default.aspx

According to the article the big fish was not a HSB but a pure strain striped bass. Also the mouth size on that fish suggests it is a striped bass. Hybrid striped bass reportedly do not get that big. Regardless that was a huge fish. FYI - The Missouri state record HSB is 20 lbs 8 oz and the world record HSB is 27 lbs 5 oz(AR) significantly less than the 65 lb striped bass in the article. http://www.stripers247.com/arkansas-hybrid-striper-record.phpThis one will give the Herman Brothers and all pond owners with HSB a goal to "shoot" for. From Overton's link above: Limitation on Species – Hybrids are smaller than pure stripers, but they can tolerate a wider range of environmental conditions. For this reason, they are preferred over striped bass for stocking Texas private waters. The hybrid striped bass produced at Texas hatcheries is the "original cross," that is, a male white bass is crossed with a female striped bass. This is the “Glazner Hybrid Striped Bass” The reciprocal cross is known as the “Sunshine Bass”. Hybrid or Pure Strain – Hybrid Strain, varieties are sometimes called wipers, sunshine or palmetto bass." These HSB will often grow to 10 lbs with ample food in ponds. Overton says they often live average 5-6 yrs in TX, but I've seen them live to 21 yrs in a northern Ohio pond. If that 21 yr old HSB gained one pound a year in your pond think what an amazing sight it would be. Do we have a PBoss Forum record size HSB grown in a pond?

That's what I get for listening to the wife and not even reading the entire article...lol Thanks Bill! Not an excuse for such a blatant screw-up...but I was making a large HSB order I need to get delivered when she sent me the link...lol

I figured you were distracted when you made that post. I added my information for those interested in learning more about HSB.

Whatever that thing really is, I'm not going swimming in either of my HSB stocked ponds for a while.
