One of my goals at this conference was to meet more people to put names with faces and then I got involved with the silent auction for the Jesse West Foundation. I will be in the area for the next 4+ weeks so maybe our paths will cross.

I learned all kinds of things but one thing that really amazed me was how soft my hands got from that fancy salt stuff from the bathroom!!
That stuff was unbelievable!

I can answer that question as soon as someone tells me the point at which conditioning and learning diverge paths. The real question is can fish engage in abstract thought absent conditioning.

Ewest, I teach psychology and there is a whole school of thought, behaviorism, that claims that all learning/thinking is conditioned. Personally I don't buy it, but there it is.
What I'd like to understand is how algae "knows" we are searching for its DNA and how it manages to change it. Squids actually edit their RNA depending upon conditions.

A study of fish (or other living organisms)will reveal a host of survival mechanisms that have evolved. Many of the things we notice in living objects other than those that deal with obvious things like nutrition , reproduction and activity are survival mechanisms. When I try to figure out why or what is going on with a living organism I start with the drivers of life ( nutrition , reproduction , survival and stress avoidance {i.e. environment})and try to see if those account for the behavior.
