I am getting started with my first trout pond and I have a lot of questions about: Liners, areators, shade vs direct light, how deep, and habitat. Mostly, I just want to get off to a good start with a healthy pond. What would be a good recource to guide me at the beginning of the building process?

Hey We are pond builders in NY state .After construction of many trout ponds up here make it deep and good water supply. also add what we call bank pockets for shade we do not aerate our trout ponds but circulate them . I would check with Mr. Bob lusk on aeration for trout in arizona. We are carving 3 now if you would like we can send you some photos . The rain is killing us up here its like walking on a big sponge Scott Trava

Scott,
When you mean "circulate" them are you using a diffuser to mix the water? That is what I do.
Are you feeding the trout, or do you have low enough densities to allow enough natural feed to keep them sustained?
What size ponds do you typically build for trout and what depths?
What species of trout are you planting? Have you found brown trout are difficult to completely harvest?
I typically have brook, brown, and rainbows in my pond, but this year I'm going with only Lake Nipigon strain Canadian brook trout. It took me 18 hours of driving to haul them to my pond! I grew four state record size brook trout (domestic eastern strain from Virginia) by the end of this year and want to give this particular strain a try.
Just took out over 500 lbs of trout in my 1/2 acre/foot 88 by 59 ft. pond. (I feed my trout) Most were browns to 11 lbs. 12 oz.
Sorry for all the questions but I love networking on the subject of trout ponds. If you have any questions for me feel free to ask.
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

The pond is 1/2 acre foot.

You can also use the same function to remove one of your posts. For example I've removed one of my posts when it was duplicated for some uknown reason. Ric

Jeepers Bill!
You used to be the one that asked how to do things on here! I guess you're a fast learner.
