Our pond is 3 years old but has only been full for one year. We have 3/4 acre of surface area and the depth varies from 5 - 15 ft. We had a definite leak on the backside of the levee which has been repaired... at least we no longer see water on the surface. It has been a hot ( 80+ days over 80 degrees) and mostly dry summer in Indiana with no runoff from rain which is the only natural source of water to refill the pond. Periodically, I do add water to the pond by way of a pump from a nearby creek. I know that most ponds seep to some extent. I see no damp areas. I do recall that during construction the contractor who is very experienced in pond construction) did break through the blue clay on the bottom and exposed a very small area of gravel. Water began to seep IN at that time. The contractor covered the area with about 2 ft of clay. What is acceptable? My pond seems to drop about 1-2 inches a week. I have never let it drop very far to see exactly how far it would go.

I'm also from Indiana (northeastern) and I think you have had more rain than we have! One or two inches a week from evaporation and some seepage (all ponds seep -- some more than others)during drought conditions may not be that bad. However there are more experienced folks on this site that can verify or refute that.

I would be more concerned it you see the pond going down under normal precip conditions.

Thank God I have a well to fill my ponds. I've never seen it this dry, and an old timer across the street says he's only seen it this dry once before.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.
