A Piranha PE135e "homeowners" pond dredging pump would seem to be ideal for my purposes. See: http://www.piranhapumps.com/homeowner_dredge_photos.160.html However, I sure would like to try one before I buy one...Anyone know where I might rent one of these or something similar? I'm in the foothills of Northern California, near Jackson....

I don't know anything about dredging but that pump looks just like the ones I saw on the Discovery channel being used by hobbyists to look for gold. You may check on ebay under gold mining equipment.
