While Zephyr Pond was low, I was considering having someone come in and deepen it and clean it out. But!!! I was digging post holes to extend my dock last weekend and noticed when I was digging, it was clay down to about 30 inches and then I hit sand stone. Oddly enough water started to come up in the hole. I am now afraid that if I take off that top layer of clay I will certainly cause the pond to leak. Comments please.

In Dog Beers, I've had one.

Sometimes better is the enemy of good. This may be such a case where in trying to make the pond better, you may it actually compromise it. Personally, I wouldn't risk it....and certainly not without digging further to determine how far down the sand goes and what the soil is like in other areas of the pond basin.

I think your suspicion is right and your concerns are well grounded.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

a few more investigative test pits would good to do, but yeah, sounds like deepening could be a problem. However, can you still use the (dry) opportunity to remove excessive sediment/silt build up (increase pond volume), sculpt some new structure, raise the dam some??
