A friend just put a 12" diffuser hooked up to 1/4 hp areator. The pond is 16' deep and he placed it at 7'. I thought that wouldn't be deep enough to remove the thermocline on a nightly basis. The pond is .37 and he is planning to run it from 3am to 7am. The co that sold him the unit suggested the 7' placement. Will that be ok?

What is the point of mixing only the top 7ft which is what will happen if the diffuser is placed at that 7' depth during thermal stratification. Truth be known the pond is probably already mixing naturally down to 6'-7' deep. I just checked an unaerated 0.35 ac pond 18 ft deep and it had good oxygen of 4.6 - 5.5ppm (73-74F) down to 7'-8' deep. Surface was 82F and 7.5 ppm DO. Nine ft zero oxygen.

Just a shot in the dark, but maybe it is a low pressure pump that can't produce over 4 psi?????

Not likely, but maybe. Would be strange they would sell something not designed for his situation, but stranger things have happened.

Thanks guts, what Bill states is pretty much what I was thinking.
Snrub, My first system was purchased for me by my daughter and was not what my pond needed, the pump only lasted 4 months. Not necessarly being ripped off but more than likely uninformed employee.

Yikes!! 4 months?? There must be a warranty. But, yes, you were sold an inappropriate system. You need a piston compressor for that depth.

There was no warranty cause my son in law pulled a good ol boy barter with someone as dumb as he is. Bill C got me in touch with a real good unit that has been working without flaw for its fourth summer and probably saved my fish from last yrs brutal winter.
Sad thing is I went and looked at the unit my buddy put in for his gfriend and it is the same kind of pump as my first one. Really sad thing is that he got it from a very big pond management company that my friend is good friends with the owner. Some "pros" aren't always reliable. EVERYBODY should do serious research about whatever you're doin.
