Our native BG program is starting to produce results. The photos don't do the fish justice, but he went one pound five ounces, and was 10.5" long. My biggest northern BG to date.

"Forget pounds and ounces, I'm figuring displacement!"

If we accept that: MBG(+)FGSF(=)HBG(F1)
And we surmise that: BG(>)HBG(F1) while GSF(<)HBG(F1)
Would it hold true that: HBG(F1)(+)AM500(x)q.d.(=)1.5lbGRWT?
PB answer: It depends.

How old is that fish?

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Thanks all. Our HBG program is well into its 5th year, but we didn't start getting serious with the already established, northern BG until a couple years ago. We added more predators, (LMB, HSB, WE), began a feeding program, (Aquamax 500) and started removing smaller bluegills via traps and angling.

I see some really nice fish at feeding time now, including one particular female that has thus far managed to elude capture. She's already larger than the male in the photo, so I would like to get a weight on her this fall if possible.

These big gills are fun, but I'm more excited about the smaller, younger fish I have coming to feed now. Getting an earlier start will hopefully result in larger fish.

Dave, no idea on the age.....we didn't stock these northern fish, just working with what we have. I'll try and collect some scale samples and see if I can get an idea.

Tony,

Nice fish. I get get those kind of weights too but mine seem to top out at under 11 inches. Fast growth but I don't think they live long enough to get to 11 inches.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Cecil, do you attribute this to their diet, or a combination of factors?

Don't really know. As you know some sources say bluegills don't live that long anyway. Other sources say fast growth means a shorter lifespan. Some sources say there's too much carbs and subsequent fat in commercial feeds. Or it could be genetic. Could be mainly one of those things, some of the above, or all of the above.

I will be trying a lower fat and lower carb diet soon to see if it makes a difference. Might take a while to assertain the results.

Great fish as always Tony! What's next, you keep raising the bar.

Oh, I looked up the scale sample test. Good mention, it's exactly what I needed to know.

A lower carb diet for older fish has to help lengthen life span.

Nice BG !!! As Bill notes low carbs is good for BG as they don't digest carbs. HSB can use carbs but not so with LMB , BG etc.
