Was playing with my new cast net in the creek. This is where all my forage fish ended up when the dam failed. Creek is generally 4' wide and 1-3' deep with holes to 6'. That's when it's down. After rains, add 4'. I have thought there looked like lotta my golden shiners in there. I'd never used a cast net, but sure had fun learning. Rounded up a pail of fish and went to figure out what they were. Took pictures in a burger box with lil water in it, so you get a scale. I'll mention what I THINK the fish is then a picture or two. PLEASE chime in what they really are as I am just learning.
1. This one I think is a fathead minnow with tubercles, so likely spawning. Dark lateral line. Gills got caught in net, so bleeding on bottom is my fault getting him out.
2. Golden shiner. down-swooping lateral line, silver to gold shiny scales. Dunno if the dark spot just before tail means anything.
Emerald shiner? Large eyes, small mouth, dark lateral line.
3. No clue.. some kinda bottom feeder. Bottom mouth, yellow/orange eyes. Greenish mottled back.
4. Another bottom feeder. Bottom mouth, quite long anal fin. Lighter eyes.
5. GSF? blue and yellow speckles. No red on opercular tab. Tempted to throw them in pond just because they were pretty, but they went back in creek.
