I'm clearing trees and brush for my pond area and want to know if I should burn inside or outside the water line. Maybe it doesn't make a difference, but I'm guessing there will be several hundred pounds of left over ash. Does anyone know the effects it would have on the ph balance ? I'll still have plenty left over for good structure. Any advice will be appreciated...as long as it's good ! Thanks !

Well the one component you can be sure of in the ashes from burnt lumber is Calcium Carbonate. It will have the effect of increasing the alkalinity of your water once the pond fills up. This could be good or bad depending on your area and the natural PH level that would occur depending on the soil/rock in the pond site or the area of runoff feeding the pond. The ashes will also act as a natural fertilizer. A percentage of potash for sure, not sure what else. Others on the PondBoss forum from your area may be able to help in regards to what ph you may expect without the addition of the ashes.
