I have had zero success in finding anyone that will actually deliver ag lime to my pond in Nacogdoches. I have found one seller in Nacogdoches who initially agreed to deliver it but has since went MIA. I need a minimum of 24 tons and don't have the capability to buy it in bulk and deliver myself. Does anyone have any recommendations on where I might be able to get someone to deliver to me? I think the name of the outfit I haven't had any success with is 4 C fertilizer or something along those lines. This is year two I have struggled with this and my water clarity has really let the vegetation get pretty rough.

Try calling 936-560-7711 and ask that same question. They should know.

Thanks for the number Esshup!

Unfortunately, 4C or picking it up at Longview Asphalt (which is only about 65% lime) are the only two recommendations the local Ag Extension agent has at their disposal. Guess I am at the mercy of waiting on the local outfit

Dang. They weren't in the office when I tried to call. I guess they don't get in until after 9 a.m.

Who else around there supplies fertilizer to farmers? Around here, (maybe because of more crop growing activity?) there are a few places that supply fertilizer and lime. Go 20 miles away and there is another set of businesses that do the same thing.

Yeah this part of the state is getting less and less rural all of the time. I'm going to keep digging though even if I have to pay a bit of a premium for someone to deliver outside of their usual area.

You may call these folks and just ask if they know anyone,
since they are in your area and probably have good contacts:

I JWM, my hope is to build an 8 to 10 acre pond fairly close to Marshall, so I'm interested in the quantity of lime. How much do you plan to put in per acre of pond? How did you arrive at that number?

I'm sure your pond is like mine, on acidic soil, so this would give some idea.

I have a 7.5 acre pond so your numbers could be very close to mine as far as lime goes. Give your county extension agent a call and ask for a soil sample to be done. It cost me 10-15 dollars and it took about 3 weeks to get the results. Since I already have water in my pond lime requirements can be determined by a water test which the extension agent will also do for free and be able to tell you the results instantly. If your not going to have to bring in a lot of dirt for the pond build you could go ahead and have your soil limed and be that much better off from the start. I have also been told that if you can afford it to have all of the surrounding soil or at the very least your main runoff limed as well. My pond will most likely need 4-5 tons an acre every 3 years or so.

Thanks, those are good ideas! My pond to be (cross my fingers) is in a relatively big watershed with lots of clay, but the watershed is planted with timber. Lots of pine needles to build up acidic tannins, obviously. Don't know if liming the timber would do any harm to the trees and wildlife, will have to look into this.

Best of luck!

I can't be certain on how the lime will affect the trees however I doubt making the PH level better in your soil will do anything but help. Same thing with the wildlife. I would also consider a silt pond in front of the big pond that will serve as a trap for all of the pine needles etc.

Well another Ag lime source found and another source that says one thing and does another. So I am still looking for a reasonable supplier for Ag Lime. Was told to call Tuesday @ 4 and set up a time for them to deliver it on Wednesday. Did all of this and then they no showed on Wednesday and the boss of the outfit has been avoiding the telephone ever since. Anyone have any recommendations?

You might try a local dump truck guy. There are guys around here that own a dump truck and make their living by hauling for local contractors and landowners whatever type load needs to be hauled. These kind of guys usually have lots of contacts and may know of a quarry they could deliver a couple loads of lime from.

Also a local trucking company that has dump bed semi-trucks might be able to to a back haul.

I had a truck load delivered to Shreveport a couple of weeks ago by a trucking company out of Paris, Tx and the Lime came out of Hugo, OK. I don't remember the name of the trucking company, or what I paid, but I know that they were prompt and did exactly what the said they would do. I don't have their name and number handy, but I will send you a PM with my phone number and if you like you can give me a call tomorrow. I should have all of the information at work.

Thanks,
Pat
