Whats the main difference...

temp tolerance?

growth?

I have ready hardy lilles are best for small ponds as they tend to be less invasive.

Any thoughts on tropical lillies?

The main difference is the tropical water lilies do not tolerate water temperatures below 60F; primarily for plant zones 8-10. Tropicals have more colors, especially nice blues, compared to hardy hybrids. Most tropicals are more fragrant. Tropicals will bloom mostly in afternoon evening and night compared to hardy varieties that bloom mostly early, mid morning and close mid to late afternoon; vary rarely early evening. Regarding size and rate of spread do some due diligence and read about the specifics of each variety.

I have numerous water lilies and have had for years and am limited to hardies but would love to have tropicals if our weather allowed it, for all the reasons Bill stated.
