I'm a complete newbie and have been browsing the forums for a bit. I would like a small pond on my property. Any recommendations on builders that won't dig out a big hole that won't hold water? Thanks.

Welcome to the forum! Send a PM to RAH and Sprkplug and ask them the same question. IIRC they are relatively close and may have a reference for you.

When doing homework about pond builders ask for specific references of ponds, maybe 10, that they have built and then contact the owner and ask questions. Every builder has built a few leaker ponds when they encounter 'poor' soils. Ask for a reference of a leaker pond and then ask the owner about communication and willingness of the contractor to repair the leak! Pond owners love talking about their pond, be it pro or con. IMO you want a contractor that has a high percentage of non-leaking ponds.

It would be a good idea to read the article in Jul-Aug 2013 back issue of Pond Boss magazine:
HAND SHAKE OR CONTRACT? SPELL IT OUT. Tim Matson and Lusk describe what is needed for written agreements with pond contractors. Discuss sketches, engineering, staking outline, dam features, and cost estimates to avoid a hole without water. Include details, materials, deadlines, labiality insurance, cost figures, plus some added legal points from a lawyer.
Call the office for a copy of the back issue: 800-687-6075.

http://www.wharffexcavating.com/ These guys seem knowledgeable and fixed a couple problems created by the original contractor.

Mick,
You've found a gold mine by discovering Pond Boss. Even if you're not gonna build the pond yourself, arm yourself with knowledge so you can ask contractors/pond builders intelligent questions. You'll also be able to identify any shortcuts they may try to take if you don't know any better.
