Others have said this but I want to emphasize the point. Make sure you hire a pond builder and not a dirt guy. The fact that he says he has to stop above the gravel raises some questions about his expertise. Find someone who knows how to do it right. Someone who can dig a key trench and properly compact the clay with a sheepsfoot roller -- too many sob stories on here from unfortunate souls who had "good clay" but the pond leaks anyway.

Many of the elevated above ground ponds near me leak down the to original ground level. This is probably due to poor soil and compaction and water seepage of the 'reservoir' walls. Without any watershed the fill water is only rainfall, roof water or pumped water.

+1 on what Bill just said. Don't underestimate the amount of water that can leak out of a pond. I can't keep my pond full with my well, and that well is pumping 36,000 gallons of water into the pond per day.

Wow. Great stuff. Thanks guys. I am now waiting for Ted Lea to call. He is a pond guy!!!! One more thing. Now this kinda sounds dumb but I have my masters in Biology and when we are talking small ponds u have to be careful of parasites ie worms deadly amebas etc. now I know it is far fetched but would an aerator reduce these numbers. Thanks.

The dangerous Amoebas I believe can only exist in quantity in nutrient rich waters that are pretty warm, like Florida. Worms? I know nothing about, but the right fish should keep those under control.

Muskrats are not very friendly to a pond (especially if it is raised). Mine is level with the ground and can't drain anywhere. Stock your pond and it will also help with mosquito control. You can still swim, fish and ice skate (when cold enough). You wouldn't believe how many of your kids friends will want to fish grin.

Keep in mind not all clays are equal. Also, you may want to look at the hydrology of the area you intend to build as part of your planning.

There are different types of clay with different mineralogy. The bentonite mentioned is a type of clay mineral with a high shrink swell capacity. It is used to seal around well casings.

You mentioned you are south of Lima. That area can be a mix of both upland till soils and outwash (well drained soils underlain with sands and gravel). The upland areas can have soils that have expansive clays, (but would not be as expansive as bentonite). If it a depressional soil, you might have both a water source and deep clays. If it is better drained you may end up with a pond you have to keep filling, and if you are not diligent those clays that expand when wet might contract and crack when dry.

We had a kid die here a couple years ago from an amoeba. He had been swimming in the red river.
