Our lake currently has one bank with some spatter dock on it. To see the pictures go to the link below:

http://albums.photo.epson.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=4001548&a=30445124&f=0

These pads have been on our lake for about 8 years. They have not migrated to any other area of our lake and the area they are in is about a 12 x 12. These spatter docks were imported from Caddo Lake, TX.

Would there be any harm in adding a new type of water lily to our lake?

Do the fish benefit from them?

If so, what is the best lily to plant?

Are there any tricks on keeping the beaver, nutria, and ducks from pulling newly planted pads up?

Whay have our spatter docks not migrated to other areas of the lake

I'll take a crack at this one, but I have to admit that Texas is way out of the area that I am familiar with.

I do not believe that there would be any harm in adding water lilies. In your area, I'd think about trying Sweet-scented White Water Lilies (Nymphaea odorata). Fish and lakes can and do benefit from them. They act as a wave suppressor, which reduces the impact of shoreline erosion. They provide shade for adult fish and spawning habitat for some forage species. Also, the shade that they produce can reduce algae and nuisance weed growth in the immediate area.

We don't have any nutria up here, but I think they are something like muskrats on steroids? Generally, the way we deal with this is to plant quite a few tubers in an area (one tuber/10 feet of shoreline), hoping that a few will survive and spread. This is usually easier and cheaper than protecting the tubers with fencing or other material. Each situation is different and should be discussed ahead of time with the plant dealer.

It could be that the rest of the lake is not suitable for spatterdock, which usually prefer stagnant, shallow waters with a silty-bottom. If you plant it in an area that is halfway decent it will probably take, but conditions need to be good for it to spread.

Harvey,
Build an exclusion fence, and plant inside. A square fence, with a top, placed over the plant, pushed into the mud, keeps creatures away long enough for the plant to get a good start.

Hi Harvey,

Once the spatterdock is established the grass carp won't totally destroy it. Like Bob said, put a cage around it and it will establish itself, and probably spread. Usually, Sweet-scented White Water Lilies (Nymphaea odorate) won't cause as many problems as spatterdock, and they produce a nicer flower. Both provide good habitat. If either of these grow outside the range that you want them in, you can spread Navigate or spray with Eagre + surfactant. However, don't plant them in the first place if you have a situation where they will spread rapidly, for example, shallow, silty, wind protected ponds.

Other plants that I would consider for small fish cover include: Water Celery (aka Eel Grass, Vallisineria americana), Pondweed species (Potamogeton), Coontail (Ceratophyllum demersum), Bulrush species (Scirpus), Water Buttercup species(Ranunculus), Pickerel weed (Pontederia cordata), Water Shield (Brasenia schreberi) and Muskgrass (Chara). All of these plants have their pros and cons. I would highly recommend that you read as much as you can about them before you plant. Also, consider control options ahead of time to make sure you can deal with the plant. I think the book Water, Weeds & Algae is available on this site, and it is a great one. Also, we have lots of plant info, including some treatment tips, on our site.
