Wow....this pretty scary when you think of hackers, rogue government elements here & abroad and besides cars, think about planes and trains too.

If we accept that: MBG(+)FGSF(=)HBG(F1)

Would it hold true that: HBG(F1)(+)AM500(x)q.d.(=)1.5lbGRWT?

Lets see them try that with say a '69 Camaro.....

There's a reason why "old school" is still popular!

Exactly...they're welcome to bring their laptop along when they ride with me in my 11 year old Chevy pickup......if they want to watch Youtube videos with it. And what was the deal with dismantling the dash? Do they need to be hardwired into the vehicle's electronics for this to work?

Show me a case of someone sitting in a Starbucks, picking out a car at random and using their laptop to take control of it in less than 60 seconds, and I'll start to worry. I'm sure that day is coming, but you won't catch me wrapping my vehicles in aluminum foil just yet.

I would think a couple of college kids might,
but who knows what the NSA/CIA/DHS is capable of.

I suspect this is how they could have murdered
investigative reporter Michael Hastings.

Michael Hasting was working on NSA/CIA story when his mysterious car "accident" occurred.

What's wrong with a stick? They're really fun and easy to get used to. You don't even have to think about it as shifting becomes natural. Had them for years!

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

You would be amazed and scared if you knew what can be done with dealer level software on a modern car.The worst part(actually kind of good if you want to wrench on your own car)is there are plenty of cracked versions floating around for most makes. There was just a thing on the news in BG about how they just break the window of high end luxury cars, plug in and away they go.Cars that where supposed to be theft proof are now easier targets for thieves in the know in europe.

I personally have dabbled in modifying the bosch ecu on my Audi with a friend who does aftermarket tuning, and even for a non tech savy guy like me it is super simple to defeat the immobilizer, change programming etc etc.Just with free software off of the net and some time on this forum http://nefariousmotorsports.com/forum/ Granted that forum wont tell you how to do this, nor is it whats needed to do such things,it just goes to show what info is out there. For me I use RossTech's program for diagnostics etc and with this and some time I could do most of what these guys show just through my diagnostic port no need to remove the dash frown

Agreed, but you're still hardwired into the car...that's just the 21st century equivalent of crawling underneath and sabotaging the brake system...it still depends on a hands-on approach.

Now, a vehicle equipped with OnStar, or it's equivalent? Id say all bets are off, as we all know remote control of the vehicle by another is very possible in this situation.

If you need to physically touch the vehicle in some manner in order for the nefarious scheme to work, then there will never be a adequate defense, at least in my opinion. Whether it's this century's laptop or last century's hacksaw, damage can be done.

Show me the system that affects a Non-OnStar (or equivalent) vehicle, Wirelessly, without touching the vehicle, and I'll begin to worry.

Otherwise it's just another conspiracy theory in my book.

Sprkplug, you are absolutely right about there not being much difference between this and old sabotage methods at this point you still need physical access to the car for the most part.

Onstar on the other hand if hacked/cracked,all bets are off.Luckily it's only based in the US at this point and most hacks/cracks i know of come from eastern europe wink

The thing is the criminals doing this have little interest in hijacking people. There main goal is stealing cars plain and simple.

I suspect in the not so distant future that if your car has one of those "smart keys" you are going to see a big rise in insurance premiums.

There was something on the news a couple weeks ago about hacking into cars with cell phones. Didn't really pay much attention to it tho.

Another scary thing is that "some" control systems can be easily hacked, or can get viruses now.

About a year ago, maybe longer, a guy hacked into a water treatment facility and destroyed all the pumps and motors by jacking the VFD's. He knew what he was doing because he was familiar with the operation. He was caught pretty quick tho.

I got into a control system that I needed to, but should not have been able to do it. Everyone associated with this had passed away and no info available. I yelled Bingo inside of 5 minutes. It's a bit more complicated now, and seriously doubt Bingo will ever be said in that room, unless that's your dog's name wink

Fully automated vehicles provide a host of benefits, as long as the systems are optional, or owners possess the ability to turn off the function at will.

Hog wash on, "Fully automated vehicles provide a host of benefits."

I don't like technology much. Some of the screens are blacked out for security reasons. I am tracking TJ, his friends, relatives, and business associates on one of them.

Hogwash? LOL - you don't realize what you're missing! I'd frankly love to set "Snooze Control" and get to Chicago and back from 11 PM - 6 AM. In terms of tracking, I also could care less who knows that I drive to my farm 4x weekly and feed fish and pretend I'm busy with chores. Aside from the occasional leak outside, I have nothing to hide.

Regardless, it's all a moot point for guys my age - as everyone knows all children born post 1970 have been fitted with chips clandestinely during vaccinations [Measles shot] and are constantly being tracked. Amazing how many times they've looked the other way during my lifetime - figured a few of my hair brained schemes would have sent the black Surburbans swarming!

I doubt you will ever see "Snooze Control", because it is totally impossible to counteract and respond properly to the vast conditions one may encounter on the road.

I just woke up and discovered Snooze Control has me a mere 5 minutes from your doorstep, good buddy. I'll brush my teeth here in the backseat, grab this killer Vodka and meet you in the shed. Hope we have ice!
