I'm from the bay area, I know the weather here is pretty miserable compared to da dirty south. Just thinkin out loud...any suggestions for a 1/2 acre pond or so? I was thinking maybe bluegills, mosquitofish and catfish. Thanks!

Welcome to the forum. There's a number of members from Ca. here. Instead of Bluegills ((BG) look into Redear Sunfish (RES). Unless you stock some catfish that are pretty adept at eating other fish, you might be overrun with panfish in short order without a pisciverous apex predator like LMB.
Or, you could look into feeding the fish, and stocking Hybrid Bluegills (HBG). They don't have the fecundity that regular BG have. The HBG and Catfish will grow pretty durn quick if you feed 'em.
