Pond Boss Forums STOCKING A NEW POND Creating the food chain Too Many Frogs?

I have thousands of frogs that are transitioning from the tadpole stag to frog. They have their legs but still have there tail and are in the water most of the time. As I walk around the pond hundreds of these frogs are jumping from the shallows to deeper water. I am wondering if this many frogs is a problem? The pond is stocked with HBG and HSB. The HSB are 13-14 inches long so the frogs are now way to large for them to feed on. Is this a potential issue? Do I need to add another predator to control this frog population?

Wouldn't worry about it. If you had largemouths their numbers would be much smaller.

Herons will target them too.

I wouldn't worry either. Less bugs!

Ya food for the Herons is the way I look at it. Keep them off my fish.

Thanks guys, just checking since the numbers are really large. If I could be guaranteed if single sex largemouths I would add some to bring there numbers down but don't want to risk it.

and an occasional bird too! Bullfrogs will eat anything they can fit in their mouth.

Time to piggyback...I have the same problem or issue.

toads and frogs arrived before I even stocked the ponds with minnows. Now there are thousands of toads and frogs along with thousands and thousands of tadpoles.

I thought I read it someplace here at Pond Boss that tadpoles have a bad taste and nothing really eats them, confirm??

The fish in my pond love the toad tadpoles. Small LMB end up flopping on shore chasing them.

Interesting I have been keeping a close eye on the piles and piles of tad poles in my pond this year. They have now gotten to where they are hopping around the bank and the birds are eating them as fast as they jump out of the water. I see now why they need to lay so many with the hopes 10-100 make it. Birds are licking the little guys up. They are as big a small button battery with a small tail still.

Re: the taste of tadpoles - I think it's the toad tadpoles that supposedly have a bitter tang? I know that bullfrog and leopard frog tadpoles are what's on the menu at my ponds. They don't last long in open water.

I have thousands of BF tadpoles along the shorelines and thought I read were they put off a distasteful pheromone that fish didn't like, but now realizing, it depends

I wish I would have taken a picture but I'm pretty sure one of my 10" bass had one in his mouth at the same time it was taking my 1" curly tail. Sure looked like a tadpole when I pulled it out!
