Is there a reason that I keep seeing these black birds flying over my pond to drop what I first thought was a white stone into my pond, but no it is nest droppings from their baby birds.
Why in the world would these birds feel they need to drop their crap into my pond? Is there a circle of life I am missing here and don't understand?
Help me get my head wrapped around this phenomenon.
Cheers Don.

They're fertilizing for you.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Many birds remove nest droppings from the nest to help reduce predation of their young. The young may not smell but their excrement does (like a beacon for predators). The pond is the perfect place to dispose as it dissipates the smell.

That's very possible, Dave, but some of the birds might be dropping stones as well as waste. A study would have to be done to determine the proportion of stones to waste, as well as to determine the type of stones that are being dropped. If limestone, the birds could be helping with liming the pond as well as with fertilizing. Also, are ALL of the birds depositing items in the pond or are some of them making their deposits on land?
This also brings up the question of INTENT. Are the birds doing their work in a slipshod fashion of is this an concentrated effort by the birds to overfertilize the pond or perhaps to destroy the pond by filling it with stones?
All are interesting points that would require much more study.

I will tell without any question whatsoever they will poop on a formation of soldiers standing at attention. Been there done that at Lackland in San Antonio. They will have an entire parade field to do it but will let lose right above you.
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Since soldiers work for the government, birds pooping on soldiers are essentially pooping on the government, and that is wholly unacceptable.
Since the government funded a study of methane gas produced by cattle, it might possibly be interested in allocating a few hundred million for a study of birds pooping on soldiers and that could relate to birds pooping anywhere, including in ponds.
Of course, this entire scenario could be complicated by the color of the birds as well as by the possibility that they might have been dropping stones.
I never suspected that my life could become so affected by bird ... well, lets say droppings.

I'm confused by the relationship between bovine flatulance and avian excrement.
Or did you just accuse Cecil of being stoned?

While I don't want birds pooping in my water , nor on our soldiers , I don't mind them aiming at the government !
