Hello, my trusted gast 1023 vacuum pump no longer works! motor just hums then clicks off. End of last season house was hit by lightning & I had many dead areas in the house I had to track down & repair, I'm wondering if it affected the pump? wondering if I can have the motor fixed?

Yep. I did anyway. Bill Cody had a local guy that fixed one for me after there was a surge in the power line. Weird thing is the problem was the motor started running backwards after the surge!

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

pullo, Try replacing the start/ run capacitor located on top of the compressor under the cover, EZ to get to. Look at the specs on the capacitor and perhaps Graingers will have an economical one (Dayton) I would try this prior to taking to motor shop.Cecil, Common for the 3/4 hp 1023 and 1 hp 1423 Gast to restart the same direction they last ran. If they do not have an inline or at the glass jar muffler checkvalve that prevents air from flowing backwords this can be the new restart direction as the air pushing back reverses the direction of the non powered compressor. If a bladder type membrane (s) or just long tubing runs are being used this is a common issue.A poly 3/4 inch Brady or similar check valve keeps this from happening. The valves in the exhaust port automatically close on wob-l piston pumps so this checkvalve then not needed. The Gast 1/4 & 1/3 hp 0523 R-vane does not have this issue as much for some reason.

Ted,
Interesting. That was several years ago and it's been running fine ever since.

Probably short tubing runs where the air volume is gone by the time the compressor stops.A brass "swing valve" on the discharge side works well too.
