This is the true "calm before the storm!" It defines today. It was 21 degrees F when I got up about 6:30 AM. Now is it about 6:00 PM, and it is 38 degrees F. It got up to 47 degrees according to my electronic thermometer.

I still don't have the chains on the tractor, but everything else is ready.

I had free use of a CAT D5G all afternoon. Fantastic machine to keep things from getting in your way. So, I moved a little dirt and some trees, instead of getting ready for the storm. I just wish the thing was still here -- it wouldn't have any issues clearing the driveway if we really do get 18 inches of snow.

Anyway, I'm back out to the garage. One set of tractor chains still needs some repair.

They are still calling for 12-18 inches of snow, and maybe more, for my neighborhood.

No snow here yet. They said a possible 3-4" from this event on national. Local said, maybe 1" in our area, but quite a bit more south of here.

Glad Lake Michigan finally Turned Off!!! grin

You still patrolling the southeastern section of Fairfax County? To me, that would be a crappy job as a cop on a good day. I can't imagine the headaches in bad weather, or even during a minor disaster of some kind -- let alone, everyday issues.

It is good there are people like you who are willing to work those areas.

Yes, I am still in the Mount Vernon District. Just depends on what side of Rt 1 you're on... HAHA

It's snowing pretty good here now. Been increasing in intensity all evening.

Hey Scott you getting that snow you want to fill the ponds?

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

3 years ago when we had 2 feet or so of snow, I plowed the neighborhood witch's driveway with my tractor and she sent her husband out with a mug of hot chocolate!

I didn't get to see her or talk to her, but she was a recluse and nobody ever got to do that.

Well, the sun had gone down and it was really cold, and I was hoping maybe she'd put a shot of rum in it... or some kind of witchs' potion or something that would warm me up... but no dice! cry

Still, it was cool and I would have never expected it.

I wish all the snow that came down today would have came down as inches of rain. We've gotten probably 1" of snow per hour since around 11:00 a.m. CST. Some has already packed down from the weight, but there was 5" on the ground at 4:00 p.m. and it hasn't slowed down snowing yet. It is supposed to taper off over night and be completely done snowing by mid morning on Wed.

Now all I can hope for is the mid 40's and rain over the weekend to create a LOT of runoff to fill the pond.

The storm slid South by about 30 miles, so we got less than what was predicted. The maps had more snow coming later on in the week, but that has fizzled out already.

We've had so little snow this year that people have forgot how to drive in it. I DO have dedicated snow tires on the car, and I was going 45-50 in a 60 mph zone - 4 lane divided highway. I could have driven faster, but as it was I'll bet I was passing people that were going 30 mph.

Saw a local police car pulling away from a stop light. The car didn't have a limited slip differental, and he must have had the speedo pegged on 60 mph, but his ground speed was only about 10 mph. His spinning tire was throwing snow a good 2 car lengths behind him. 5 cars left him sitting there spinning across the intersection as they passed him in the right lane.

The neighbors Dad died Saturday fron cancer (it was quick), so I made the trip to the viewing and back home, parking the car until the plow comes thru tomorrow morning.

Scott,

Looks like snow depths varied from 7 to 11 inches in the area. Wet snow with high water content which is good for you,

It's a "Plan P" day at work today. I'm keeping the back parking lot of the local fire station very safe. The Federal Government is shut down along with the schools so traffic is very light and thus far peopel aren't driving like idiots.

Be safe today, and keep the eyes open in the back of your head. Red lights on fire engines and police cars tend to act like magnets for some less than careful drivers.

And yes, I've dove my Sasquatch-like body over a few roadside barricades working wrecks, and it wasn't a pretty sight. laugh

Ended up with about 10" total here. Snow plow still hasn't been by the house at 11:00 a.m. That's unusual, I live on a road that has a school on it further down. It's stopped snowing, but it's still heavy overcast.

Scott,

NWS says you got the equivalent of 1 inch of rain with the moisture content of this snowfall. How much will that bring up your pond?

If I was you if the level goes up this spring I would let the neighbor's pond bring it up way over your banks even if it means flooding the yard!

We're in melt and rain mode for the next 7-10 days.

This Friday should be a good day for a tan!

I used to drive a wrecker and have about mastered this move.People are attracted to emergency lights like moths are to a flood light.

We are getting pounded with heavy rains and 50-60 mph winds here in NJ.

We had snow melting today already. I always thought the way to get a snowstorm is to have it melt away in a few days.

The way that I graded the land was to let his runoff fill my pond to full pool, then if his pond gets any higher it bypasses my pond to flood the surrounding woods. Once it reaches full pool, I'll close off the fill pipe so it doesn't backflow into his pond when the water levels start dropping.
