Hi guys/gals today my dad asked an intresting question will trout spawn in a pond and i have no clue. I know that they need flowing water and very little silt and a gravel bottom. I don't need my trout to spawn cause they're cheap. but my questions are how much flow do they need, what temps do they start to spawn at, and what sighns do i need to look for if they do spawn. Thanks

Brook trout will successfully spawn in a pond if there is some upwelling and a bottom that can be cleaned of detritus down to some gravel. They will most definitely go through the motions.
Rainbows and browns need flowing water.
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

I've heard about some hybrids (arctic charr + brook trout) that also are able to spawn in ponds. how much flow do they need, what temps do they start to spawn at, and what sighns do i need to look for if they do spawn. Thanks I guess that rainbow trout/brown trout CAN spawn even in simple pond but without any successful ending. Roe needs flowing water to be able to survive...

Used to fish a small 35 acre lake in Massachusetts, USA where all the stocked brook trout in the entire lake would spawn in a small area of upwelling in about 2 feet of water or less. I knew that because if I waded in that area with my bare feet in the summer and the bottom was ice cold. Anyway, I did see some fry in the spring but survival was low due to all the the other predator species in the lake i.e., bass, yellow perch, etc.
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Small pond, the brookies are fall spawners. The fry emerge from the gravel in the spring. Just a tidbit!

All fish are not only tied to water temp, but also photoperiod for spawning.

Brook trout generally spawn in Nov. and brown trout spawn in Oct. in PA. However, there are some wild tiger trout in PA(I've caught a couple), so there is obviously some overlap. Rainbows are spring spawners in PA, but a few populations carry hatchery genetics and spawn in the fall as well.

The Sept.-Oct. 2006 issue of Pond Boss Mag. has a good article on how to make a spawning box for pond trout.
