Glad to hear you had a good trip but to be honest very jealous Lassig. My partner and I had to cancel our annual trip to Sask for business obligations. Man do I miss the prairies of canada. We camp/hunt out of the Foam Lake area and Canora area. Were the birds coming down when you were there?

The one thing I didn't miss was the price of diesel for our trip smile

I saw something on the news about predictions of a pretty tough winter.

It was 40 degrees in Fort Worth this morning. That's really unusual at this time. 80's return tomorrow.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Forty-two here now -- late afternoon. Still no frost, but quite close this morning. The leaves are in near full color. The acorns are still falling. Lots of deer and squirrels moving around.

I'm going to go start a fire in the woodstove while I start packing to head off to Pond Boss Five!

I've been looking at winter weather predictions for a couple weeks now. Hard to tell what will really happen, but the leading edge indicates that we will be in for it this year. That's why I am staying put till next spring.

We'll have low's around freezing this week, which seems a bit early.

A strange thing I saw a couple days ago were Pink/Red sky's to the east when the sun was coming up. I never noticed that before.

An old line of thought, is if you have a very cold fall, a mild winter will follow, at least around here.

I wish I had a fireplace.

Matt:

I've seen bucks chasing does all the way into January here.

Good idea on the coat tho. I wonder if since they are blowing their coat from summer to winter if i'd be able to get it tanned, or would the hair continue to slip?

I'll see it again, I'm sure. That picture was taken 20 yds from the stand. I'll be back out there for a few hours Wed morning.

Buck and doe tag is in hand for cheeshead country. wink
We're leaving 11-15 to beat the traffic jam going north.

More Geese than we have ever seen. Numbers seamed to stay the same all week, so not really sure if more came down during the week or not. We hunted the Lake Lenore area and stay in an apartment above a pole barn. Nice accommodations, full kitchen, 3 big bedrooms, and full bath. Diesel was the same as gas between $1.26 and $1.29 a liter. I had to full three times in Canada with all the scouting we had to do. More geese than usual but moving in very large groups. They would come off the roost by the thousands at a time and then all sit down in one field. On two occasions we hunted fields in the morning after seeing 10000+ geese (maybe more like 20000) in the field the night before. Shot 51 and 38 snows the next day. Typically we would shoot near limits (100 snow geese) on setups like that. Seam to be smarter geese this year and less ross geese. Of course the ross are a riot to watch working the decoys.

That sounds like a wonderful trip and congrat's on the success.

Man I really miss chasing those birds, getting set up under them, and calling out over the deafing sound of locked up birds..."Take em'!"

Shot a doe on Friday night to get some venison in the freezer. Then last night this monster body of a deer came into 10 yards and I put him down. Not the largest rack by any stretch but dressed out at 210 and most of his molders are gone. I had to call the neighbor for help in dragging the one out of the woods. This deer may be 6 or 7 years old.

Very nice. Don't see many deer that big in TX. We tend to grow racks, and miss the greatness of venison. I would have been all over that buck too!

They're starting to spar a little around here - buddy of mine had 4 bucks - 2 shooters - messing around @ 50 yards from his stand yesterday evening from around 6 through dark - sparring but still mostly in jest at this point. I'm also hearing of some halfhearted chasing happening already.

Still really early but good signs. I personally haven't seen a set of antlers since the first weekend. Several good does but no horns on stand. Gonna get some tree time in this weekend and really start hitting it hard next weekend.

Lassig, that's a heck of a deer! Last week I had a trail cam pic of a buck with a G3 broken off, so they are sparring with a little bit more seriousness around here.

Shot the deer at 10 yards with my Matthews compound with only about 10 minutes before the end of shooting. This is the first real buck I have seen on stand. But I have only hunted 4 evenings so far.

Lassig...Congrat's! Very nice animal.

Things are starting to heat up here too. Beans and corn are alomost all out. The deer are using my food plots pretty heavily now. Just need one of those big boys to walk by.

Scott, I am not finding the deer aging site, do you have a link to it? Thinking of getting this guy aged, but I really don't want to mess up the euro mount I plan on doing. Found it, I didn't get enough sleep last night.

Mark:

Is this one the one that you found? This is the one that I was thinking about:

I'm not affiliated with them, just posting info.

That is the one I found, I have to pull the incisors out and send them in. But first I have to figure out which teeth are the incisors, I believe they are the front most teeth. I am going to start the process of the euro mount tonight so I will pull them out of the lower jaw then.

You are correct about the teeth. Lower front. It won't affect the mount at all.

Have the head in the pot right now boiling away. Not a pretty job but the end results are usually nice.

The waterfowl season kicked off today. It felt great to be wet and cold again smile

Wasn't the most active opener, but we still had a great time. We managed a couple of mallards and picked up a couple woodies (after Scott left us). No Scott, I am not going to tell the entie story. We doubled our bag limit after you took off and that is all evryone needs to know!

On a personal note, the 2012 opener will be memorable for me for one other reason. Havested my fist duck ever on the pond! A nice drake mallard.

Lets see, you doubled what we had shot after I left correct? O.K. then. I don't need the whole story, all I need is 2 questions answered. wink grin

1) How many shells were fired after I left?

2) How many birds flew away after I left?

IIRC, none flew away while I was there, and I only used one shell. wink (that were in range to shoot - I'm not counting the 3 woodies and the 1 Mallard that flew away at 203 yards....)

Does someone need to invest in a good rangefinder? grin

How'd Puppet do on the Woodies?

Congrats on the Drake at the house! Where was it?
