From what I can gather the eel grass I collected from the St Johns river, NE Forida is Vallisneria americana. I am wondering if any one new more about it such as maximum growth height and light sunlight requirments. I have read on line but am finding conflicting information.

I would prefer it be a taller veriety and be able to handle moederate lighty and not require bright light as the pond water is not chrystal clear.

Standard eel grass grows well in lower light conditions. It normally grows to 3 ft tall but I've seen in taller closer to 4-5ft and in optimum conditions 6-7ft tall. The flowers on sprial stems will always reach the surface no matter what depth the plants are growing. It will grow to depths where ever there is enough light for it. As the population covers more and more of the pod bottom expect the water to get gradually clearer as is spreads out and gets deeper.

Also, will it do OK in a more soft bottom or does it have to be in the more sandy bottom. I planted in a softer bottom area of pond, I was wondering if I should have strted it in the sandy part so the rots can grab better.

Been my experience they do better in sand, but I have seen them growing in muck bottom as well.

Good idea of planting some also in a more sandy area. Then you can compare how well each one grows in your water.
